Following on from Part I of this thread... http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/240211-World-Cup-2014-Brazil?p=6620807&posted=1#post6620807
Yeah, sorry Chilco. I was aware that you'd put a bit of effort into it, as well. By all means copy any paragraphs over. I've done that myself, in the past. FWIW, I agree with the points you made. Where I still differ is that I am by no means satisfied that FIFA are squeeky clean on this. If some investigative journalist found corruption, which went down to referee level and favoured the Home countries, it would not surprise me in the least. I'd probably raise one eyebrow slightly. As to a comment earlier in the old thread about the vast majority of refs giving that penalty, I would suggest that, in that case, the standard of refereeing needs to increase dramatically. However, it's my belief that the vast majority of refs wouldn't have given that penalty. I know this is South America, where players going down under breezes is rife, but can you imagine a decent ref like Howard Webb giving that..? Not in 20 WC tournaments.
Agreed. It's frustrating people saying "well, it was a penalty if you apply the rules", or "Dejan shouldn't have done it, he was taking a risk" - well no, no it wasn't, and no he wasn't. It just wasn't a penalty by any stretch of any imagination.
The ref made an honest mistake, he would have been well within his rights to show a red card for some of the abuse he took after that, the lino gave the second one I think, which was also debatable. Other than that I thought the ref was pretty lenient and got most decisions correct. People need to get it in perspective. Corruption?? Come on, seriously??
It's not corruption, it's just the usual standard of refereeing we have come to expect. They are rubbish.
God bless them, you are right AL. Some of them are awful sometimes. But I think nearly all of them would hope that they did the best they could and hoped not to make any mistakes. It would be nice to see more often, when they have got it wrong, to come out and admit it and apologise. I think that would help people to get over it if they did.
This isn't just about the penalty. Croatia had a goal disallowed which should have been given. Rakitic was fouled just before Brazil's third.
Well, referees the world over. They were dreadful decisions but none of them are particularly uncommon calls.
How did South Korea beat Italy, Spain and Portugal? The referees were simply dodgy and just happened to make all their horrendous calls in favor of one team?
No, like Dan said, the whole of football's referees. I know you will disagree regardless, but the standard of officiating is appalling in football. I'm not saying that referees don't do their best, but it clearly isn't good enough.
The conspiracy theory is that the home team gets favours because FIFA benefits financially from them staying in. Or are you suggesting it's the actual teams doing the bribing?
So what's your proposal to improve the standard of refereeing, rather than just criticising it every time?
