It's funny how people make wild assumptions based on little or no information. I've had hundreds, over the years, who think I'm an ignorant Philistine. (Now that's a very early religious bashing name.) In reality I'm a church going Methodist with years of work with the Salvation Army. I take my faith very seriously but that doesn't stop me enjoying the crack on here.
Let's all blame the French and Yanks for the muslim conflict. Had it not bee Pope Urban who got the first crusade started, followed by George W who gave a speech a thousand years later about the US crusade against terrorist muslims then some sort of peace would reign. The crusade word was just the thing the Mujahadin needed.
Don't mention the Bloody Salvation army for some unknown reason they would congregate outside my bedroom window on a Sunday morning and bash hell out of thier tamborines and trombones when I had the worst hangovers after being to the locarno till 4 in the morning.
No, actually, I have much better things to do with my time, but don't let that stop you from being glib
Yes, it is - text has the advantage that views can be considered and comments can even be withdrawn, amended or revoked. Also, you might think twice sometimes before hitting 'Reply'. On the other hand the potential for misunderstanding is increased compared to face-to-face debate. Many religionists feel they are 'personally' under attack and complain that the relatively recent rise Atheism is a new form of beligerent dogma (and even going as far as to label it fascism!?). I can understand all that, however the irony is lost on me either
Don't forget to keep coming back to tell me you have better things to do and how bored you are. Remote parts of the world, ffs
I aim to please You started a thread that actually encouraged people to bash religion. You ended up getting all your arguments mixed up and bashing religion yourself. You tried putting words in various people's mouths and were put in your place. Then you claimed that honour killings only happen in 'remote corners of the world' "Every year in the United Kingdom, officials estimate that at least a dozen women are victims of honor killings." You reckon you've got 'much better things to do' but every time I post you find the time to reply. And now you claim you were just on a fishing trip ......... yes, of course you were I'm not biting, I'm having a laugh watching the worm wriggle on the hook.
I'm white too, hence the reason I had to put the asterisk in, real home boys don't have to use asterisk's. Yeah let's go for the Buddhists, baldy bastards don't even believe in god or salvation and they still go about Comm's patch causing trouble!
Nowt against the hard core lads mate, it's just the 'pretend Buddhists' that boil my piss. You get these 'pick & mix' so-called religious people who claim to be Buddhists, or whatever, because it sounds profound and trendy. In reality they don't have a f**king clue about the religion and always try to change the subject if you question them on it. The worst are the ones who quote from half a dozen religions depending on the situation
I rarely spend much time talking to people about religion mate, usually if I'm talking to a person with a faith and they begin to mention god or jesus or Alans Snackbar or moses or noah or hashem or whoever, I'll just tell them I'm not interested in whatever they're going to say. The ones who scare me most are the ones who think god is protecting them, they literally let their 3 year old children play by the road on their own because they think god is watching them. I speak about the orthodox Jewish community predominantly the frum community who are that obsessed with god that they can't comprehend basic safety procedures to protect life! I wouldn't give a **** but if I make a Jew-pizza with a bmw badge imprinted on the face of one of their kids, it's me who has to live with it on my conscience. Edit: Yet ironically a lot of time discussing it on here!
My inevitable question to religious extremists is, "Do you really believe your God would want you to do that?" Some of their self-imposed rules are mental tbh. The saddest example I encountered was when I went to Nimes airport to pick us some clients who were coming down to look at a property in Provence. We were coming past a truly spectacular range of mountains and the sunset was breathtaking. I remarked on it and looked in my mirror to see them looking away and shielding their eyes so they couldn't see. The older chap explained that they were Jewish and it was their Sabbath which precluded them from openly appreciating anything of earthly beauty. I obviously couldn't comment but thought 'what a f**king sad sack of ****'.
It's ridiculous some of it mate. I drive through north Manchester a lot and there's a huge Jewish community up there, looking incredibly miserable and live a groundhog day lifestyle. The Hasidic Jewish lot lack what appears to be even the most basic education, they just drive aimlessly with massive hats on so they can't see where they're going and I'm constantly swerving out of the way of their Jew-wagon minibuses full of 8 dumb-as-**** kids because 'contraception is forbidden'. They are that inbred that they ALL wear glasses and many have serious posture conditions, just born out of their inbreeding. Before I'm accused of stereotyping, I'll be happy to point any non-believer of my tale in the direction of these people to prove it. They live in maybe 2 square miles and barely ever leave the community. I can't comprehend that they enjoy any quality of life, but I only have my own life to use as a yardstick. My best mate handed a Hasidic Jew a copy of Escort or Razzle in a petrol station when we were both queuing to pay and the bloke made a funny noise and ran off into his car and started rocking. I thought, what a poor ****, never seen a centrefold in his life.
Personally, I believe there is a "god". As in a being beyond our level of comprehension that created the dimension we exist in i:e the big bang, but does not exist in the sense of matter & time that we do but rather brought that into existence. As for religion I think that there will be a handful of people who know the truth of things but will not let the normal populace know this and rather use the whole concept as a tool of control. But that's my train of thought, I'm as blind to the absolute truth as anybody else.
