As I mentioned earlier in this thread, we need to rein in our expectations of what we expect ref signings in the future.

It's easy to miss, but if JWP, Luke and Calum hadn't been promoted out of the academy, we'd have had to make three (probably quite big) signings to get the squad to the quality we currently enjoy. Look for more of this in the future. I'd love it if transfer windows could eventually become something in which we took no interest.

It's an easy option to spend large amounts to buy in known talent; it takes guts and great confidence to bring through untested youth. The end result, though, is financial stability and a team that plays much better than the sum of its parts, as everyone has grown up with one another.

Mauricio didn't say absolutely that there would be no signings in January...he can fudge with the best of them, especially with the extra layer of caramel provided by an interpreter. However, we must be patient...even if people are proved right by our lack of depth resulting in a fall off in our league position. Nicola found funds from somewhere to buy last summer and we must trust him to balance the books.

Good point. If we'd signed the now Manchester United reserve left back, Buttner, would Shaw have broken through? I'd like to think so but it might have taken an injury or something for it to happen.

It all depends on just how good the next lot are. If you think about Man Utd's 'golden generation' they haven't really produced anyone of note subsequently so we don't want to fall into that trap.

He also expects Ramirez to fulfil his contract, which is the duty to train. Our MP doesn't suffer people does he. :)

Do you think this quote from the BBC article may be a certain Ramirez?

One senior player is said to have returned from a recent international break hoping for a rest and was met with an ultimatum of whether he wanted to play in the next game.

We'll all be guessing who that was. Ramirez is the usual suspect because we are beginning to think that he may not have the right attitude for us (I say for us, because he may feel he is being reasonable). Could be Lambert because he is elderly :) Dani because he hates being worked like a dog! They all looked miserable and cold in the training gallery with only Lovren and Dani smiling.

I must admit, he was the first player I thought of. I doubt if he was given an ultimatum though. I suspect it was that he had returned from a previous international break, as written, and was questioned over his energy levels, which I've no doubt were poor. Flying from all parts of the world, typically South America, can take it out of you. I bet his body clock was all over the place.

Of course, by the same token, it could easily have been Yoshida..! :)

Ramirez was my first thought as well, but the ultimatum seems pretty unlikely. It would have to be someone who actually expects to play.

It is couched in the weasel words "is said to have" though so it's probably not even true.

I think that Guardian article is my favourite ever article about Saints.

So positive that we can rely on our academy. It reminds me of me on Football Manager. All we have to do is hope that the youngsters can step up!

It is hugely positive. When I think of youngsters like Harrison Reed coming through and imagining if he'll be as impressive as JWP and Shaw, and that's just one player, and there are several champing at the bit right at this moment. Very exciting times for the Academy and Club.

I've been told by a friend with good Liverpool connections that Lallana to Liverpool for £20m in January is a strong possibility and Lallana wants the move.

I don't really believe it but I thought I'd throw it in here in case it happens. Then I can come back and claim I'm ITK! <laugh>

Did you tell your friend that you thought it was utter tosh..? :)

Besides, you don't need good Liverpool connections to find out that stuff. It's been all over NewsNow for the last week or so. You should read some of the crap that gets published online, by so-called reputable newspapers.

Here's your own link. Now you can tell him before he tells you: http://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/Sport/Football/Premier+League/Southampton

I did. He actually seemed more surprised Liverpool would offer as much as £20m for Lallana.

I've seen the stories on newsnow but he knows someone on Liverpool's medical team or something and he's told me some things about Liverpool in the past that have been true so I thought I'd throw it out there.

Well anyway, they've taken their focus, if there was any, off Lallana and supposedly put it on Will Hughes. Yesterday, Rodgers said he was best off staying at Derby.

Funnily enough, when I posted you that link, I went back to NewsNow to try to look for articles on Liverpool being linked to Adam, and there were some back from last Thurs/Friday. However, I would estimate that there have been around a 1000 or more articles since about other things, some more, some less resembling utter twaddle.

:)

I can quite believe Liverpool preparing a bid of £20m for Lallana. However I find it impossible to believe the bit about Adam 'wanting it'.

Why would anyone believe that it is a move that he would want? He's been with us through the worst possible times and could easily have jumped ship. Why would any credible source think that just as the world is beckoning for the Saints and for Adam that he would want away?
