More a lament about financial stratification. Keegan's transfer cost a fortune in relative terms, but I doubt that he'd have been on 4-5x the wages of the second-highest earner, as Iniesta would be.

It's all about the academy and it looks like Reed & Targett will be part of the full squad next season, so I don't expect us to be buying any full backs or central midfielders any time soon. How long does Fox have left on his contract?
Lee will probably be allowed to leave if Gallagher is getting ahead of him on the bench.

If Ramirez does go then we will need a flair player as Lallana will be our only option. Banega is the only positive link, but i'm sure there are plenty of players out there who could do a job. It's way too early for Hesketh, but he looks a talent from the clips I've seen..

I still have my doubts over whether Banega would actually be a good player for us. I think there's a good chance he could just go the same way as Gaston.

Yeah I feel the same, but if we're determined to get a player like that then we'll either have to shell out a ****ton or just take the risk. Will be quite fun either way.

I expect we'll get another first choice CB in the summer but not January. As well as Fonte is doing, without Lovren alongside him he is not a top 6 CB. I'm fairly happy if any of our CB's had to play alongside Lovren, but as soon as he is out for any reason we are much weaker so I think that's a first team position we could improve on. Trying to be cut throat here....I love Fonte :emoticon-0107-sweat
If Shaw is out then we are much weaker with Fox in the team, but with Targett coming through it's a difficult one, but I think it's unlikely that we'll bring in anyone. Same with Boruc, we could do with a better No.2 but that seems unlikely in January at least.
A creative attacking midfielder seems to be a priority as unfortunately Ramirez hasn't worked out. Otherwise, I can't see that we'll do much in January. The summer will be another interesting one though, if we finish in the top 6 this season.

Cortese should have listened to me and signed Mkhitaryan.

Banega might work a little better. He certainly isn't afraid to throw himself around, and while his positional sense (as with Gaston's) may be suboptimal, his contribution to our pressing may be as good as we can find in a playmaking central attacking mid. If he keeps his head screwed on properly, at least.

It's worth signing Banega just to hear all the fans of big clubs say "why weren't we in for him. I can't believe he's gone to that middling tinpot team".

    Again.

What, the one that was nearly funny..? No. The truth is, I'm acutely aware that whatever we say here makes not the tiniest jot on the tiniest dot of difference in reality. So we can have our fun.

Put it another way. If I had proposed in League One, what Saints are doing right now, you might have played me the video. :)

Fans shouldn't put limitations on things. Especially when the club they support doesn't, and also when they have no say in them anyway, and have no risk, save for some illusory reputation on a forum. It's OK to talk backwards and forwards about possibilities, but let's remember that the club will do as it will whether we are limited or not. So we might as well not be.

I don't hate Banega, but he's a very lazy player IMO. His talent is such that he's worth it for the one out of every five games he feels like hustling, but that's what you have to live with. I wonder if he would even care if you benched him most of the time and all he had to do was play against the top five sides.

If Saints move for Banega, I'll give MP and NC the benefit of the doubt that they can get him to change. But I still think we will get someone in better than Banega (though it might have to wait until the summer).

I for one like the look of that Irish lad Aiden McGeady, his contract runs out at the end of the season and he said he would like to play in EPL.

Pacey winger, equaly confortable on left and right, very good dribbler and crosser.....

It's a sellers market in January. Think we'd get good money for Ramirez and I'd be tempted to offload Jos and Guly if the money was right (+ Fox maybe). Worth noting as well though, this year there are players all over the place who want a move to make world cup squads - we'd be a good fit for many of these. Kevin De Bruyne on loan would be an excellent signing, he fits the mold beautifully and would be a top class addition. I'd like a cup price deal for Guidetti as competition up front as well.

Would love a utility defender too, ideally a cb who can play left back but this can definitely wait until the summer.

Basically, I'd be happy keeping the squad we've got but if we get good offers for players or if good players become available then there's definately merit in doing business in January.

Lets just sell everyone apart from our 1st XI. And maybe 2 subs, we'll be ok.

    Can't do that. Remember:

Boruc - Staying, but Arsenal are going to want him to lord it over Szczesny
Clyne - Staying, though it can't be long before he's off. I mean, he must.
    Fonte - Besiktas
Lovren - Staying for the moment, but don't get comfy.
Shaw - ManU, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal.
Wanyama - Staying, but only for the shortest possible time.
    Schneiderlin - Liverpool, Arsenal.
Cork - Fulham only at the moment, but once the word gets out.
JWP - Staying, though it won't be long before Arsenal are linked
Ramirez - Every club in Serie A, but especially Internationale
Davis - Staying but waiting for Rangers to get back to the SPL then he's off.
Lallana - Liverpool and everybody else.
Rodriguez - Liverpool because he's a Lancashire lad.
Lambert - West Ham, because Carroll will never get better [He's unwell].
Guly - Back to Brazil at any time soon.
Osvaldo - Serie A, La Liga. Hey, why not throw in the Bundesliga as well.
Targett - Better have him while we're at it, says buying club.
Chambers - What's left..? England U19 Captain. Yes please..!
Yoshida - Didn't get enough games and so couldn't be persuaded to stay.
Hooiveld - Utrecht to go and join up with De Ridder.

Poch has a Plan B. Play the kids with the interpretor as lead striker for Champions League.
Cortese makes subtle changes to new 5 year plan.
