It makes me giggle when people say a band are naff or not good. Being musically challenged as I am, I always think music is 100% subjective; each to their own. Am I wrong? Can music be bad or is it really just a taste thing? I often wonder if bands don't get liked, because a; it's not cool to be seen to like that particular artist, or b; it's cool to not like anything considered "mainstream".

This from a man who puts Kylie and Prince very high on his lists of musical likes <sorry>

I do like Coldplay, I find their albums a little hit and miss unfortunately. One thing I will say is that they were absolutely fantastic live.

I think you are 100% right. When talking about bands/artists I tend to stick to the subjective comments about whether I like a band or not and why rather than making a statement like "Band A are ****".

Completely agree , taste in music is just like taste in food , clothing etc . Each to their own .

It's absolutely a taste thing, but it's much easier to say "they're crap" than "they're not to my taste" or "I personally don't like them very much". Objective wording of a subjective message - exactly the same as when someone says a band/TV show/anything is good!

Agree with this..but tastes do change with age,20 years ago I only ever listened to radio1 , now never in a million years would I put radio1 on it's heart fm or CDs for me now.
For the record I like Coldplay and also agree they were really good live.
In the car at the moment I have Fleetwood macs greatest hits and dark side of he moon in the player.

Are your tastes really changing though or is it the radio stations that are changing? I mean, I think the stuff that would have been played 20 years ago on Radio 1 is now what's played on the likes of Heart FM. The music on Radio 1 wasn't played at all 20 years ago because they're too afraid to play anything older than a few years old.
Jack FM is the one for me

One exception: John Cage's "4'33" is objectively bad music. It's bad music in the same way an apple is bad music, or a cat is a bad horse.
