Lot's of clubs do! Wigan are always favourites, I think the fact they have spent so many seasons in the top flight, against all odds, should be applauded. I reckon if you ask any Wigan fan they'd have taken relegation and winning the FA Cup this season. Which is a pretty decent achievement I'm sure you'll agree.
Think it is to do with his budget mainly, can't be easy when you constantly lose your best players. He's a young manager and has already shown in his managerial career that he isn't scared to change things if it isn't going well, along with winning the FA Cup in impressive style (not a single game at home)
He has a meeting with Dave Whelan planned. But are Everton a big enough club for Whelan to release him to ? Dont rule out a club in Spain taking Martinez this summer. Real Madrid maybe ? Mark Hughes now the bookies fav but Di Matteo or Poyet would fit the bill that Stoke owner Peter Coates is wanting. Save your wonga. Steve Bruce wont be going anywhere especially to Stoke City. That would be the least of Stokes problems. Look at the complete mess that Mark Hughes has left @ DQPR. Wigan lost many of the defence for too many important games. Look at the last 3 homes games and the key stone cop defending. 3 games they were 2-1 up and 9pts but ended up with just 2 points. They should have stayed up and Slumberland would have gone down. Grrrrrr.
I can't see three worse squads. Look at QPR's squad and they finished bottom. That's how strong the PL is now.
Didn't Boselli cost £12m? An extraordinary amount for Wigan. And how good has he been? I've posted many times - before they were relegated - that I know Wigan fans and all to a man always maintained they were better under Bruce than they are under Martinez.
On 29 June 2010, Boselli signed a four-year deal with Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £6.5 million.
I never got the whole Martinez thing he has taken them backwards. Brucie got them finishing 11th and 13th yet since he left they have not finished above 15th and now have got relagated how is that progression? Also Swansea, WBA and Stoke all spring to mind finished higher and better than Wigan every year on similar if not smaller wages yet Martinez is still a great manager.
I didn't say 'all Wigan fans' did I? As if i could say that - would i claim to speak to all of them? I said all the ones I know.
Martinez set the blueprint at Swansea for how they play now. Since Bruce left Wigan they had a pretty high turnover of their better players (Palacios/Rodallega/Valencia/Baines/Bramble/N'Zogbia/Melchiot/Cattermole) etc
Exactly! A few years ago he may have gone but now I think he'll probably realise he's loved here and to be honest if he finishes 17th it'll be job done. If he goes to stoke they seem to think they should be champions league
I think Bruce will want out of Hull when he realises it's so similar to Sunderland. Impatient, pessimistic club with fans that can never, ever be pleased.
I just checked Wigan's spending since Martinez took over and it's quite interesting. He's spent a total of £32,100,000.00, but in the same period they made £43,750,000.00 from player sales, so are made a transfer profit of £11,650,000.00 in the past four seasons. Which is very impressive, but the most interesting thing is with the exception of Moses(who cost £2.5m and was sold for £9m), all the other big money player sales were players who were at the club when Martinez took over. Apparently, Stoke have made Martinez their number one target.
J Endorses what I have said. I do think he's done a good job - plus they have quite a few saleable assets with all the Mc's at the club and Kone etc.
