I was a bit surprised by the length of it too - it's the longest deal of anyone at the club - but it's yet another display of faith in him from people inside the game and it would be foolish not to take notice of the accumulation of those at this point. Every manager we appoint sees him as indispensable which has to tell you something.

I think this should put to bed the idea that he's a poor captain too.

I know he's not a shouter on the pitch - but he's clearly having a positive influence in the dressing room.

I think we might be getting to the point where we need a better option on the pitch but he'll be a good person to have as a back-up.

Everyone keeps telling me a poor player. He plays week in week out. A lot more said for him than a lot of other players at the club.

Reminds me of Ashbee, Dawson et al. Not the most gifted of players, but always gives their all, and wonderful servants of the club.

At 30, a 3.5 year deal is basically a signal of intent; he's wanting to see out the rest of his career with us, and he presumably knows he'll become second fiddle before too much longer.

Club captain all day long.
On the field captain? Nah, I don't get it.

What's the difference?
If he’s not explicitly shouting some will never be convinced. Load of bollocks. If he wasn’t a good “on pitch captain” he’d have changed, simple as that. All managers have kept him as the captain.

The only argument I have for it is because he’s a full back. I’d much rather a centre back or centre midfielder

I hate leaders who shout and bawl. I think its a weakness, although I do think he could do a bit more encouraging - but maybe the squad just know what he's like.

He’s clearly an incredibly liked figure across the many squads he’s been a part of. That’s captain material in the modern day.

He’s a good, steady player with some real limitations. The way we have played most this season has allowed him to just do what he’s good at without exposing his limitations. The role he was given at the weekend vs Bristol really exposed his limitations (driving up and down the flank, offering width and attacking the final third).

In my opinion.

I agree. Decent defensive right-back at this level. He’s a bit like Luke Ayling when he was at Leeds.

Asking him to do what Giles does just doesn’t benefit him or the team though.

Thing is, every player in our squad has limitations, but with Coyle it seems like they have to be mentioned more often than anyone else. Right now the flavour of the month is Crooks with him being injured and at times badly missed, but people don't feel compelled to point out every time he's mentioned that he constantly fouls people and that his decision making on the ball is very frustrating at times. With Coyle, even when people are defending or praising him it seems like his limitations always have to be acknowledged as if you can't be taken seriously without putting him down.

The thing with coyle is he’s lacking where most competitive players in his position at this level are pretty strong. Attacking full backs are a big part of the modern game. It’s fine when he has someone in front of him that provides the drive, width and unpredictability on the right but he can’t do that himself and he doesn’t work well with Joseph either who also struggles to attack the right flank. In a similar way Joseph has worked pretty well on the left with Giles, they complement each other nicely.

It’s a bit like having a goalkeeper who’s good at finding his man but can’t save a shot at his near post for toffee.

In Coyle's instance it's because the main limitation (progressing the ball) is generally a lot more frustrating, more boring and more harmful to us winning games than Crooks breaking up play by giving away a free kick somewhere in the middle of the pitch too frequently.

I like Coyle, and I think he offers a lot to the team and the club, but he's often a frustrating watch when we're on the ball or chasing a game. Steady - yes, adventurous - too rarely. You can't constantly opt for safety first football when you're a team challenging towards the top end of the table. Too many were guilty of this in the last game (the formation didn't help), and as a result the game ended up being a bit of an implosion. Too much safe ball just ends up with us being slowly outdone.

Pretty sure a lot of our players wouldn't be anywhere near the pitch having suffered the knocks bumps and injuries Coyle has had over the last few seasons, yet he more often then not goes through the pain barrier to represent his home club. He may not be Messi on the ball, or the most vocal captain we've ever had, but my god is he is trier, the amount of times captain courageous has been mentioned in his time here is there for all to see, and given were we are with regards the embargo, I'm happy that he is ours. Besides all the afore mentioned, how many new players have credited Coyle for helping them settle in and making then feel part of the club ?

How's Allahyar been getting on at Westerloo?

See he's apparently out of contract the end of the season. Wonder where next for him.

I'd take him over Millar and David and...

He'd only just be out of contract with us this summer if Westerlo hadn't taken him off our hands, there was a point where we put a huge amount of faith in him with a contract length only matched by Greaves'.

This is from an article today...

Former Hull City winger Allahyar Sayyadmanesh put in a fine performance this past weekend to help drag Westerlo away from the bottom four. The 24-year-old Iranian, who is out of contract in the summer, grabbed his fourth goal of the season and an assist as Westerlo beat Antwerp 2-0 away from home.

His first full season there (24/25) he got 7 goals and 6 assists in 35 games. He’s got 4 goals and 2 assists this season in 21 games.

I always maintain he was a decent player. An unbelievable athlete in terms of strength and pace for his age. He was really unfortunate with us after his hamstring injuries and Rosenior just didn’t fancy him after.

if Allayhar came back - he's be 'hamstrung' within weeks. Then we'd be back locked in the perma cycle of two months out/one month back until Westerlo agreed to take him back and kindly pay his wages (despite being injured).

Anyone know if Reda has been playing?
