If he played he’d surely be sitting in front of the CB’s to dictate play as far as possible when in possession. A Yorke type role. He probably has enough to do that. Think I’d prefer to avoid it though, based on baggage. Although an honest statement about getting the move all wrong and I’d feel differently. There remains an opportunity for him to redeem his hypocrisy.

There’s a role at clubs for experienced players at end of their playing days to transition into coaching. This is where I see Henderson fitting in. It’s a gap in our approach as I’m not aware of a pipeline of young promising coaches at the club. I can see Johnny Evans getting a similar opportunity to complete his badges and work with a club st a decent level. Liverpool used to be fantastic at this.

We won't have that much possession the the PL. He won't get that time. Won't be able to press or track the pace that runs in behind. For me, he is the absolute opposite of what we need. It's not ajax where they have 70% possession every game. We will be lucky to get 30% in the PL.

The time for that was surely when he signed for them.

If he’d have just said ‘I was offered an opportunity to set up my entire bloodline for generations and I felt it was something I had to do’ then that’s hard to argue.

He’s always been strong minded and had a spine, that’s why he captained Liverpool. He could have stood strong on his reasons.

I feel like that boat has passed.

If he comes, as with literally any player in red and White. I’ll back him.

I just think there’s better options, especially if he’s gonna cost us 69k plus a week (which he surely will)

Aye, let’s stop trying to level it out h oh ver the Saudi thing cos that’s too polarised.

None of us will question a phenomenal career, immense experience and the romance of it.

However, he’s glacially slow now (was close to that even before he left Liverpool), and that should be as far as we need to go.

He plays on what will be such a vital position for a team that’s going to fight to survive and it just won’t help us. The way a PL number 8 or 10 can collect, then and run we’d be in massive trouble.

Let’s look at it clean, if he didn’t have Sunderland links, would we want him? Who’s an equivalent without that?

Jorginho - Gone to Brazil as can’t compete
Casimero - Shambolicaly bypassed in PL for 2 years
Busquets - MLS

These are 3 that it’s easier to argue we’re both better players (I’m not underrating Hendo here, he was superb)

You could add Matic, Gross, both still playing for Elite European clubs for the counter argument, but neither of them are exactly doing bits.
His lack of pace is a real worry for me, as I said as a player he would be great in the dressing room and the last 10 minutes or so of a game but he can't start at PL level

We need legs in our team, I want us to be the fittest squad in the league, I want pace and power throughout the team - then RLB can have us well organised and dangerous on the counter

That's how we can stay up

My concern with Henderson is if he starts most week, I'm fine with him as a squad player only as he will be great in the dressing room and great as an impact sub when needing some experience t9 settle things down

My issue is him starting though, his legs have totally gone imo - watched him get bypassed in a slow Dutch league and that will be 10× worse in the PL

Yes folk are concerned about the Saudi connection, I do feel some will be more angry simply due to Newcastle connection to them. I wasn't impressed when he went there, he realised he messed up and that's why he moved on after a few months

It is worrying regarding his legs being gone, what system did Ajax play did it leave him exposed at all?

What you make of Lamine Camara mate? (Off topic but I like him a lot)

Ajax have all of the ball. We’ve no idea what state he is in from them other than they collapsed end of season when teams went at them. Teams will go at us every week.

433, so he had 2 CMs alongside him and he struggled with getting about the pitch

We will likely be 442 out of possession so our 2 CMs have to be fit and be able to cover the ground

Before he went to Saudi I was told he was very close to coming here, wages weren't an issue but it didn't happen for whatever reason.

The lad made a mistake, haven't we all?

Are we suggesting that we can't sign any player that's gone to Saudi? What if we made a move for Toney or Neves?

Very fair statement that last paragraph. Of Milinkovic-Savic or Cancelo…

It’s more the fact none of those did rainbow laces campaigns and equal rights videos to raise profile.

In fact Cancelo I believe refused to be a part of any of that and fell out with Pep.

I get that, but the point remains they have all taken the Saudi cash.

Personally if the club think he can do a job next season and he fits the structure then bring him home

Not a Sunderland lad who was literally captain of England the the LGBTQ lead football advocate. Yes I am suggesting we don't. It's beyond the pale.

Tbf we signed Isidor who chose to play in Russia who are killing children.

Not saying that makes everything okay. Just that where players choose to play is a grey area with no absolute right or wrong.

That said, Jordan did position himself as the moral high ground so it’s understandable that people feel let down by his choice.

The club don’t get much wrong nowadays so whatever they do I’ll support.
Agree with this. I can understand the indignation some people feel about the Saudi thing, although I'm struggling to bring it on board. Every time we shop in M&S or Sainsburys,or put fuel in our cars we're putting dividends in Saudi pockets.....it just isn't possible to remove the hypocrisy from it,no matter how well intentioned.
The Tuchel interview about Jordan was compelling, but I'm still of the belief that him signing for us would go against the culture we're establishing and, whilst I get that the PL is a big ask,and experience is often valuable,if our strategy of the last 4 years is to be maintained,I trust our recruitment and our coaching to be good enough.
