There's actually some excellent striker options who are free agents at the moment and having put together what looks like a decent squad now, it seems mad to me to not have a proven striker to finish things off.

Can we afford the "excellent" ones though, I mean surely there's a reason others aren't in for them as strikers are a rare commodity that everyone wants one of it seems.

The list just doesn't strike me as one that has anything that is better than what we've got out of the ones that are achievable. Maxi Gomez could work but I'd imagine they're maybe weighing up the options of getting a stop gap in now as opposed to waiting till January and getting a player that works

Regarding the striker, I can see the argument for a FA now, but I suspect that, having had something unexpectedly go pear shaped with a target this window, they have their eyes on a striker better than what's available now as a FA (as in a better fit for us, a better longer term option, etc) and are confident of getting him in January, hence not making a signing for the sake of it now. Maybe they believe that in January they can get the player that went pear shaped this window. If we didn't have Bedia, Burstow, plus other emergency options (Longman, TSF, Kamara, false 9's, etc) then I'd see it much differently, but we do, and what we have is really not that bad, especially compared to what we've suffered for so long (bar Delap).

I suspect Fofana might well think again about joining us in January after 3 months not playing at all, the daft bugger.

One of the free agents we were linked with was Žan Vipotnik, who ended up signing for Swansea and has scored for them already.

There was another that I thought would have been a great option, but I can't remember who it was now (he's not on the free agent list any more, so presumably got another gig anyway).

Yeah fair on Vipotnik but they signed him before the transfer window closed, when we were chasing bigger fish. In retrospect of course, we should have gone for him instead but that's easy to say now.

I don't think it's particularly unreasonable to say we don't want to sign a free agent striker based on what's available. It's surely not as simple as just looking at someone's goal record and trusting that that means they'll be good for us. The striker would have to fit our style of play, wage structure and want to come here. I think it's very possible that there simply isn't a free agent striker who meets those criteria. Some have said Connolly, but he was a Rosenior player and probably doesn't fit into what Walter wants from a striker, even if you could sort out his mental side which seems impossible.

If this ever happens again can somebody please vet the questions so we don't have all the
ones about getting served at half-time and free travel etc. etc.

There's no chance we will go in for Connolly IMO. He was very much a Rosenior signing, at least this is what Baz keeps banging on about and it seems plausible, he thought he could get a tune out of him and he did to be fair at times. But he's not a Walter striker in any way shape or form and I doubt Tan or Acun would want him back either

Yeah, plus Kamara has been given the #44 shirt so Connolly’s **** out of luck.

Remembered the other one, it was M'Baye Niang, who's just signed for a club in Morocco.
I don't think either Vipotnik or Niang are upgrades on what we already have in the shape of Bedia, Burstow and Kamara. It's nice to have numbers and resilience but we also need quality. We were going after Tom Cannon the other week, he's another one that I'm not certain would have been an appreciable upgrade on what we have already - scored a few on loan at Preston, couldn't get in Leicester's Championship team for much of last season.

Waiting for the next Delap is the way to go in my view. I'm disappointed we didn't sign that kind of player in August, but now the window is shut I'm happy to wait it out.

To be fair. If we had signed Delap without his record here many would have put in him the same description as what you have now about Cannon. He had an injury at Leicester and then couldn't get in over Vardy or Musa.
