Almost like a turkey that's gone extinct. But that was apparently his nickname anyway. Like you couldn't make it up.
Did he say why we're not gonna sign a free agent striker? I've gathered it's all about January. Has he said why though? I have growing concerns that Bedia and Burstow won't be enough between now and January. Is Acun confident they will be?
He seems to rate Bedia, but acknowledged the need for more. We obviously had money on the table for a permanent striker. Maybe we didn't want to compromise on revisiting that in Jan by committing to a year long, probably expensive loanee now?
I don’t think he was on about Fofana, sounds like that was a fairly basic we agreed a fee but he didn’t want to come (at least so said Baz on the 1904 club). No, probably one of our other targets and the club reneged because they got a better offer/decided to keep or something.
If he did this time, I remember him more emphasizing the need for patience, which he came back to a couple of times. But obviously regular top 10 and the occasional promotion push is the longer term expectation for the club.
Oh almost forgot the only other mildly interesting titbit that Mehlem was a Walter signing, not a “brain team” one and that this was unusual as the manager/coach doesn’t usually get to decide who we sign. But they let Rosenior have a “Brucey bonus” in Connolly (possibly two if you include Allsop) so not sure this is really that “unusual” anyway
We already knew that I suppose and I agree for most cases managers give a green light for signings. Why would you sign someone that will sit on bench forever, if he doesn't fit manager system?
The fact it's taken 2 years but he now has championship broadcast rights in Turkiye was probably notable. Especially for expats or those with dodgy dishes/sticks or whatever. But if he's investing in rights and broadcasting the competition, it's with us front and centre. He isn't walking away anytime soon.
Nice I can watch via Turkish TV then, seems correct: https://cdn.tv8bucuk.com/yayin-akisi 22:00 Hull City – Sheffield United (EFL Championship 5.Hafta) / Canlı It is still not listed in EFL website: https://www.efl.com/how-to-watch/broadcast-partners/
The media company own the football club. The media company also owns the league broadcasting rights to a country of 85 million people, with a vested interest in the success of the club. They've also bought a German channel. That could be hugely significant. Almost like Don Robinson getting us to play a game with Harlem globetrotters on the moon whilst riding white stallions. Sort of. He's perhaps not quite as 'visionary'. But Acun's demonstrably putting us in an entirely new marketplace. And the success of the club is ever more integrated with the wider success of his company. Unlike Don. Bless his soul.
I would wager that Walter really wanted Meffert as well but it was the ‘brain team’ that low-balled Hamburg and then vetoed the idea of meeting Hamburg’s valuation. Think if it was up to Walter, we would’ve stumped up the €1 million or so they wanted.
They didn't lowball anyone. MV of 800k in last year of contract. Asking 1,5m and not budging. **** off. We'll come back in 6 months if we want him. Get him for 500k if they're not looking top 2. Or we pick him up for nowt in 9 months time if he wants the move enough to let his contract wane. In the meantime we pick up Alzate instead, with at least comparable or better pedigree.
€300k was always a ridiculous low-ball offer. If Trabzonspor offered us that for Tufan, who’s a similar age and was also in the final year of his contract, we would’ve considered it equally ridiculous.
Probably because we got value for Tufan, given his final year, though I believe we accepted a little under his MV and our final offer for Meffert wasn't 300k by any stretch. They were asking significantly more than MV. Though the point is, ultimately, Alzate looks the better signing. At least as a known quantity. Probably more wages, though no fee most likely offsets that over 2 years. And still, given that progression is linear, if we're lacking at DM in about 12 weeks, then we probably pick Meffert up for significantly less. But then you'll probably whine about Simon's being loaned out again.
Why rush a free agent striker who could be crap rather than wait till Jan and maybe a revisit a striker they missed out on was the jist. And I agree with him. The free agent options are free agents for a reason
Baz has said that Walter felt the asking price for Meffert was too high. Presumably he also knew then about Alzate being available too.
