A meander through my thoughts.
Maybe, just maybe, we arent good enough to attract these coaches like Still? Maybe we are just a pawn in the game, used by ambitious people to jump the ladder. Lets face it, we finished low mid table in the championship and dont have a squad that screams promotion. We also rarely give a coach a full season, only Ross and Moyes in the last decade. Why would somebody like Still trust us to work for him?
Interviewing for a top role is a 2 way process. The interview quizzes the interviewer as much as the other way round. I have just accepted a very good role in my sector, was headhunted, but went back twice after job offer to talk to them and find out if they were going to be able to live up to my expectations. I wonder how our relatively inexperienced top table would come across when interviewed? Maybe they dont know how to provide assurances and robust answers because they dont have that know how.
Maybe we are too focussed on overseas coaches. How relevant are Sunderland to 30 something Germans or Austrians really. Perhaps if we went for the 30 something Brit they would understand the scale of the opportunity better. There are as many exciting young coaches on our shores, in my opinion, probably more tbh.
Why do our fans turn their nose up at someone like Rosenior? Every Hull fan I know said he has completely rejuvinated them. I think sometimes fans look at a loan signing or two and think it is enough for top 2 or something. Rosenior would be a very good fit here in my opinion. Similar football style to Martin who has just gone up. I would try to pinch Mousinho from Portsmouth, excellent job. I would take Evatt and I would even test Bristol City hard on Manning. These guys, if we want young, are talented with ceilings we dont yet know.
As for the likes of Heckingbottam I dont know why he is put up as some alternative universe styls disaster. He is still young enough to learn. Sheff Utd needed to go up with their squad, then completely took his best assets away. I have no doubt he would work harder than anyone if he got the job here. He would put his heart and soul into it, and wouldnt be thinking about us a stepping stone and what can he get out of us.
Anyway, no doubt it will be Still and we will be celebrating. All I want is someone to last at least 2 seasons and help mould our footballing identity at first team level. If that ends up as Rosenior I for one would be delighted. If it is Still, equally so.
