I agree mate, I don't believe we should be forcing someone on the new head coach, but a lot of people have been stating that they would prefer a 'football man' alongside him (Maric), as he hasn't played the game professionally. It may be that Maric has 'a football man' in mind already, but if not we could suggest Defoe as a possibility to him, presuming, of course, that he would be happy to come back as a number 2.

Until we know precisely what the new set up will be it's all pure speculation isn't it ...

... then we can pass a real opinion.

It could be totally different to everything so far suggested.

Exactly. It’s a huge few months ahead for the club. I’d like to think it’s exciting, we’ll soon find out…

It would make me very nervous. Especially when defoe has openly said he is going after that job.

Power dynamics are all off there and I'm not sure what Defoe offers other than a name.

Agreed. Defoe is not what we need in any department currently, imo.

Yeah, absolutely nothing against the guy but it would be sentiment and sentiment alone.

SKP has more experience as an assistant at a high level so if we did want the "football man" sentimental choice, which I don't at all, I would think he would be a better candidate.

I wouldn't want Defoe as head coach, but he could be a valuable assistant. Maja spoke very highly about him working with him when he was coming through, might enjoy helping players. Some quotes in here:

I have talked myself into wanting Maric now. Although I noticed the lad who done a podcast with Maric has said there has been no contact between him and SAFC since last summer.

Could be a good coach, he knows where the net is and would surely be good for the strikers. Not quite on par with Proctors 14 goal haul for York City like.

If he would come in as a coach fair enough. But he is talking about being head coach (manager in Old money) so unlikely to consider coming in as a lower level coach.

He might turn out to be a cracking head coach but he isn't at the point where he should be considered for us yet!

Coaching role though you can afford to gamble on giving former players a chance, it’s not as important as the manager/head coach role and easily replaceable. The way I think of it do I want to learn off someone who’s been there and done it to a high standard or someone who talks about doing it but never actually has?

A championship club would be mad to appoint him now imo. He needs to be looking further down the pyramid.

I’d argue that even when we do know what it looks like it needs road testing over time before we start pointing fingers

Absolutely, look at Keane when he came here. Promoted us. I just feel football is a lot different now and the championship is a tough tough league to start.

Think this is interesting. Managers/head coaches come from all sorts of backgrounds and the key is spotting and recruiting them before they end up above your level.

This is spot on. I'm not sure if all fans think like this, but I find that a lot of Sunderland fans (those who post ****e on forums anyway) feel like we can/should be cherry picking the very best of the Championship in terms of players as well as managers.

Even Rohl/Cifuentes are quite unrealistic in the sense that their clubs will be asking a lot of compensation and those managers may feel it's a sideways step.
