I hate the way greedy football club owners can twist competition law through a none sporting related judicial body to over turn the rulings of corrupt greedy sporting bodies.
This case was brought by Barcelona and Real Madrid. They've strangled their own league by stealing all the money for themselves and now they want to do it to the rest of the leagues in Europe! No doubt they'll be inviting a few Saudi teams to the trough too.
Thought Barca were almost bankrupt. No doubt they see this as a potential cash cow to save themselves
It’s highly unlikely that this will result in the plans being revisited, I suspect it was just to try and overturn the fines applied by the governing bodies at the time.
On talk sport this morning Kieran Maguire (the "football finance expert" guy) said the current ESL plan was for a 16 game tournament played alongside the domestic competitions but with members not playing in domestic cups and the domestic top tiers being reduced in size to 16-18 teams. I have no idea where he got that from let alone if it really is a plan. They'd surely need buy in from the domestic leagues to get them to reduce their size and I can't see what would be in it for them to do so.
Barcelona almost bankrupt. Through paying excessive transfer fees and wages? And hope transfer fees will be abolished and players will take a massive pay cut to play in such a "prestrigious" league. I think Lambrettaman has the correct interpretation.
It’s not a million miles away from what A22 are proposing in fairness. 3 tiered league with 14 guaranteed league games and a playoff system. Way more games than current continental competition. I suspect this will fall flat on its arse potentially as well as the leagues will come out against this. LaLiga already have and I suspect others will follow. My worry is that this is a real breaking point of how the football world responds
The new Champions League format which comes in next season is to some extent a response to the Super League plans and a bit of a compromise for those clubs that wanted it. It gives them a bit of what they wanted in terms of the extra games against each other and more guaranteed games before anyone is knocked out. The two things were being negotiated at the same time and the new CL format being agreed kind of went under the radar because of the more dramatic Super League stuff being discussed at the time. So to some extent, the clubs have already got what they wanted. And of course, Klopp, Pep and co will still complain about too many games when it comes to their domestic obligations.
