It is not me that is making political capital out of it. Mogg realised that his comments were unsavoury in the extreme and withdrew them. I think you should do the same.

 

Not anomalies at all. What he does do is give tax breaks to the rich, denies them for the workers (teachers, police officers and so on); starts a trade war with China, lies to the miners (sounds familiar); leaves farmers destitute and factories closing. Somebody ought to "take up their Second Amendment rights, maybe"... hey if it's good enough for HC, it's good enough for him.

 

I'm sure it is possible to be financially successful and a caring human being. Is this a little green eye creeping in?

China has had an unfair advantage trading with the US and most other countries, Trump is right to attempt to correct the anomalies. There is also an imbalance of tariffs between the US and the EU which will later be addressed by Trump once the UK leaves the EU. The tariffs imposed by the EU, mainly on cars. are higher than those charged by the US on imports. Trump is clearly after parity which seems fair to me.

They have a negotiated advantage. Spitting the dummy far from the pram won't solve it. Chinese steel, anyone?

 

It clearly makes sense for the US to ensure trading is done on a fair basis.

The fire brigade gave extremely bad advice to remain in their flats, quite obvious with hindsight. The residents would have needed accurate knowledge on the condition of the escape routes to have made a reasoned judgement. His flippant remark was wrong as the residents more than likely did not possess this information, they unfortunately relied on the so called experts.

 

Tonight Jean-Claude Juncker has rubbished Labour's plan to re-negotiate a new Brexit deal stating it is not a realistic approach. Oh well back to plan 3 or 4.

 

So Mogg seemed to think that what he said was wrong and needed an apology. Either he was lying and didn't really mean it, or he realised that his comments were a disgrace and did mean it. Which was it SH?

 

His comments were unfortunate in the circumstances which he has apologised for, end of story.

 

But is not the end of story. While people like Andrew Bridgen and you try to make light of it, many people have been deeply hurt by his arrogance in saying he is more intelligent than those who died. He is a disgrace and those who try to cover for him are little better.

 

I'm sure many people have thought and said the same. It was certainly a silly thing to say and counter productive especially at election time.

It is a pity more residents did not challenge the obvious reasoning to vacate a burning building as soon as possible. The real harm was done by the mistake of the faulty fire officers instructions but more so the lax building regs.

You are desperately over reacting to a slip of the tongue by a political opponent. All forgotten by next week.

 

No I don't think I am over reacting. Whoever had said such a thing would have received my contempt. I would agree with you on the building regulations. Again though why had the government who were supposed to be reviewing them two years earlier done nothing? Lamentable failure by the government minister who was in charge. This is what happens when you put things out away from governmental control.

Due to Grenfell building control has gone overboard on fire safety. The LABC guy has queried the upstairs windows for size of escape windows insisting on a double check by the local authority. They also require photographic evidence of fire stopping in warm roof spaces, it may require some ripping out, hopefully not.

 

If one day it saved the lives of your family you would be thankful. I spent some days at the Fire research station when it was a government agency and learnt just what you had to do to get a fire certificate. Today it has been sold off, anything to raise some cash, and issues certificates on materials it has never seen, taking the word of the manufacturers testing. It is a recipe for disaster.

 

My new house is traditionally built with bricks, blocks, block & beam floors ground and first floor. We also have adequate fire escapes, passed re-inspection. In construction there does seem to be a culture of always passing responsibility to others rather than accepting it. Sometimes common sense does goes a long way.
