There are various articles mate (probably on wikki etc too, I haven't checked). I heard it on a news show a little while back, think posted it on the politics thread

The UK automatically gives 26 seats in HoL to bishops.

These bishops are able to (and do) vote on legislation, make interventions, and lead prayers at the start of each day’s business

The UK is the only democratic country in the world to give seats in its legislature to religious representatives as of right.

Source: Humanists UK ( <laugh>, I know but it came up on Google)

The HoL is the second biggest chamber in the Democratic world

    Second only to China

  7. He said mass at Coventry airport and I went. Was an extremely feeble attempt to get the phrase sent to Coventry in the post. Lesson learned!

Is your debate about how much influence religion has in our laws or just how many clergy are present in our lawmaking chambers?

I think it should be even wider than that. There's more to religion influencing the State than just making laws.

Even so i think fan is wrong on both accounts.

I was just interested in what his pov was. For example if it was the former, surely brunei would be far higher straight away as the leader makes laws based on religion. Same with places like Malaysia and vatican city

Having a say isn't influencing, though.

Definitely not 2nd in the world for our laws being influenced by religion. 2nd last maybe.

Well this is what I was arguing earlier.

I also don't think it's just about religious people having a position of power, but rather the influence of religious groups and ideology on a state or on someone with a position of power. So for example, in Israel or India there is no religious pre-requisite to become PM but both are heavily influenced by particular religious groups - often extreme. Same with the U.S.

No mate we are second. We let Barbara who likes to make cakes down the church on Sunday call the shots, Saudi is below us because they don’t even remotely consider religion when they decide to behead people at the supermarket for a laugh.
