I knew someone would be along to google references to hell in the Bible.
Well done, you found four.
I would contend that in each of those instances, the word is used for dramatic effect, and that an eternity of torment, used to threaten illiterate peasants in the Middle Ages, has no place in contemporary Christian doctrine.

Debatable. Not the opinion part, but the bit about hell. You can contend what you like. I was curious to see if your claim was accurate. As usual, it wasn't.![]()

It's in the English translations, but not in Hebrew or Greek, barring one instance of the latter.
Like the Virgin Mary thing, it's probably not what the authors were talking about.
The one that condemns homosexuality, that was commissioned by a gay bloke with a child bride? Yeah, that one definitely does mention hell. The bible most people in this country use contains the word. That's the only bit I was questioning.
The Bible actually prescribes abortion in certain circumstances:We have abortions and everything which goes against Christianity.

The CofE is pretty moderate in terms of what people are and aren't supposed to do so I presume that even if bishops did have an influence it wouldn't make any real difference. There's no way that we are the 2nd most country who has their laws influenced by religion. It's laughable. We have abortions and everything which goes against Christianity.
Here's 30 countries where heads of state must belong to a certain religion. I'm guessing they'll be influenced more than us.

I don't think that I've ever seen an article about how they vote, to be honest. The CofE is pretty moderate in terms of what people are and aren't supposed to do so I presume that even if bishops did have an influence it wouldn't make any real difference.
Completely agree - I deliberately avoided using the word extreme thoughI don't think that I've ever seen an article about how they vote, to be honest.
They could be completely moderate or utterly fringe and I'm not sure anyone would be any the wiser.
Maybe we can read something into that, though? If they were extreme, then we might hear about it.
