I played in midfield and then defence centre or right. I now coach a team of 8 year olds which is dam good fun. The boys are at a good age where winning is nice but isnt everything.
IIRC correctly, I played in every position bar goalkeeper. The 90 minute game gave me up, as I started to be interested in other sports - swimming, sailing, and I played 5-a-side for a few years after, too.
We should have a not606 league where we compete against other boards If I'm not in the team, I shotgun being the manager. HA!
As a kid I was tall, so I got stuffed in goal, I was pretty quick as a teenager so got shifted to play up front at college, mainly as a winger, played there for pub teams through early twenties. Then dropped to Right back only because we had a team full of glory hunters and no one else wanted to defend! As I got older I moved to CB where I still play in a vets team.
Sounds like there's enough of you to set up a Saints fans team..you could play in the sash. Scummers United has a nice ring.
I scored a few, granted. But I seemed to score more depending on the place we played at. At Silverlake Stadium - scored loads, absolutely loved it. At Fleming Park - didn't score that many, didn't really like it. At the last place in Eastleigh by that school thing - scored quite a few but set up more, liked it.
You sound as injury prone as Lee Holmes!!! Do you think you could've made it to League2/Conference level without the injuries?
When I played at school before discovering rugby, a game in which size helps I started as a CM (I remember curling a beaut of a freekick in the top right, Beckham esque) then moves to CB then to GK when we played 6-a-side at Uni. Uni champs!! Then I stopped 'cause I mullured my knee skiing. Now I just fly power kites and cycle. Haha
Ha, it's not that bad, just when i get injured it's normally pretty bad. No idea, don't know how i'd have developed. The main difference between us and the pro's is speed agility and foot speed, all things that can be improved. Had I not done my back in, I would have been handed a pro contract, howver tat never happened, so i'll never know. It was also hard to break into the first team at that time as they got back to back promotions so the team was always getting better. Forgot to add, made it onto the bench a couple of times for the first team, never made the pitch though. Unless of course you count the pointless comps like the wiltshire cup and salisbury hospital cup or whatever it's called.
I'm still turning out in the local Bournemouth Sunday Leagues at the age of 47. Old fashioned Centre half, who heads the ball and kicks everything that moves (provided I can catch them). Occasionally if we're chasesing the game, I'll be pushed up front to kick a few and unsettle their back 4.I see myself as the pub team's Jaïdi. Thinking of calling it a day, as it's now taking until Weds to recover, I've also started plaing against lad's I played with's sons. Just dont want to play veterans.Still seeing Kanu still going at 63 gives me hope..........
Crikey, didn't realised it was different across the country. It's generally £18 for U11/12 football. Then £23 up to 16's and onwards which is £30 all the way up to vets which is £25. I was also getting £20 a game last year for turning up for some U10's mini-soccer, as the parents all wanted to chip in £2 each as they could never get a ref.
Aged 29. Former football genius. Played striker through tyro football. Scored 11 goals in one match before, still got the pink echo headline somewhere. Played tyro rep team and represented Southampton u16 in a tournament in germany. Also never lost a competitive match for my school team that won every trophy possible. Converted to left wing (both footed) for youth football. Free kick specialist. Scored a few goals from my own half. Had a lot of skill, pace and rocket shot. Aged 22 went on to manage own team in top division of commercial houses league. Fairly successful, played centre mid. Gerardesque. Scored so many goals but all distant memories. Hit 26, lost the passion to play Saturday's but played 5's through work and won a few tournaments...Also played at st marys and carrow road. Rarely play anymore, fitness is terrible, hence reliving my glory days in the form of this message. Nice thread chap!
