Boxing is a sport, it's not street fighting. The fact that it is a full contact sport, which carries such a high level of risk, is all the more reason that the participants should be able to defend themselves. And that when they are unable to, the referee steps in to protect them from serious harm.
Arguably the most ferocious - and entertaining - boxer of recent times was also one of the best schooled and hardest to hit. Iron Mike Tyson was one of the most technically adebt fighters of his generation, at least when he was young and he had Teddy Atlas and Kevin Rooney in his corner. You literally couldn't lay a glove on him, until the notoriety and the lack of decent people around him got the better of him.
The best boxers - the true greats of the ring - are the ones who know how top avoid taking unnecessary punishment. Some of those, like Muhammed Ali, discover that they are able to take a punch, and begin to allow their durability to take precedence over defensive technique; fighters like that usually get hurt in the end.
I don't think any genuine fan of boxing, and certainly no one who has ever boxed, wants to see a fighter get hurt in the ring.
I have no time for MMA or UFC by the way - it's not sport, it's glorified pub scrapping, and imo it's far more boring than a good bout between two skilled boxers.
