Thing I get bemused at is the bumptious denial by racists that they're, er, racist. I've mentioned several work colleagues, but one of my four sisters (the Mail reader) is the example I'm thinking of. I stayed with her over in Liverpool over Easter. She said then that she was leaning towards Brexit. We discussed it and, after her fourth G&T and I'd demolished her financial and economy arguments, the truth emerged - '****ing Pakis everywhere - they want us to be a Sharia Law state!'. She was treated two years ago in the Linda Mccartney centre for breast cancer. Several nurses were asian/Filipino and her oncologist was from Eire. And, her and her now ex husband accumulated a comfortable wealth and the large house she has in West Derby village through his work in the oil industry in Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi during the 70's and 80's. Yet there's never a trace of irony in her voice when she says 'I don't want my granddaughter to grow up in a country full of immigrants'.
And that's why I knew, from conversations like that and with workmates, that even when Remain were 10% ahead, as soon as the debate turned to immigration in the final three weeks the game was over. Not just because the English people are inherently thick (my sister has a degree), or Nazi or whatnot, but because they're ****ing stupid, paranoid and always want to blame an easily identifiable 'them' for anything that's wrong in their ****ing lives.
