Sorry I misread the stats. £4b is the amount HMRC loses just because it makes calculation errors. The total tax gap from not doing their job properly is about £34 billion. FFS.
Especially the money squirrelled away in havens by the four families that run our right wing press - money the EU were legislating to go after.
Hopefully our loss will be a united Ireland's gain. Or an independent Scotland (not that they talk English there).
The entire EU funding could be covered by still letting rich people avoid tax, but just making HMRC double check their numbers. £4b a year lost by HMRC just typing the wrong numbers.

If you're the EU right now, it would be political suicide not to support Scotland in any attempt to remain in there. They will provide all sorts of incentives. I also think the scottish people would go for it. Where I think it will fall down is the UK government agreeing to it. But the thing that's been missed here is how all this got missed when the SNP were first offered the referendum? Why didnt they insist any Scottish referendum happen AFTER the EU referendum. I get the feeling they've been right royally duped! SNP were absolutely naive and shortsighted!
I've said all along we would probably need to do some appeasing of Scotland upon an exit vote, guarantee all the current EU funding and do a good enough deal with the EU that the scots don't feel like they are losing out and they will happily stay. If Scotland left us to join the EU it would be seen as embarrassing for the uk, but wouldn't particularly damage our negotiating position. Also other EU nations with separatist movements won't be keen on taking in Scotland. The economic plan for an exit however which didn't convince the Scottish people in 2014 was based largely on oil revenue which is now massively effected by volatile prices which are less than half what they were then. The Scottish people will be worse off outside of the U.K. but inside the EU. The numbers for independance don't work anymore, if you even believe they worked in 2014.

No, a lot of the resistance to the referendum (especially from universities) was that leaving the UK would mean having to apply to join the EU and in the meanwhile losing all EU funding for a while. That worry is now completely moot since the UK is on course to deliver the main thing that worried them about independence.
There's no way this current government will agree to a referendum before 2020 and they'd justify it by saying the negotiations with the EU could remove the reasons Scotland may feel like they want to leave the uk. Though if the SNP are sensible they will wait until after we see how negotiations are shaping up before attempting to go for independence anyway.
How many times! If and when the Scottish parliament votes for a referendum there would be constitutional chaos if London denied it. Get real - when Scotland wants it then it gets it. Just a question of when.
Read my comment again, then calm down. I've said that even if the Scottish Parliament wants to go for another referendum this current government won't allow it before 2020 and will have reasonable excuses why. Before Holyrood tries to pass a bill for a referendum they will also look to get the agreement from the UK government before casting the vote which the government can drag its heels with.
Nope, I just think it's one thing suggesting the scots will have a referendum and a completely different one to suggest all of a sudden there is going to be reunification of Ireland...
