I really like O'Nien for his commitment and love for the club, I think his biggest attribute is he can cover a few positions.
I'm certainly not one for slating him as I think he does a decent job at CB, however playing a back 3 I would say our best 3 are Alese, Ballard and Seelt so makes it more baffling that O'Nien plays when we only have 2 CBs.
That's maybe to do with not having a LB when Alese was first back from injury and the coach maybes not thinking Seelt has enough experience, I do think that I would be starting him over O'Nien
Well I’ve got to disagree and I blame Mowbray making the lad captain and not wanting to drop the captain but I’d prefer players in there proper position and if there’s no place in the starting 11 then there’s always room on the bench for a good versatile player

Which is kind of what I was saying mate, I don't mind o'nien at CB if he is the only option, at the minute he's not so shouldn't be starting there imo.
I'd never thought about it till @Scout73 mentioned it but I think o'nien could have been the answer to out CDM problem this season

No8 is someone who will play box to box

No10 will play in behind the striker

So for me away from home we play 433 with 2xno8s going box to box with a defensive midfielder sitting in front of the defence.

At home we should be going 4231, with a no10 type in behind a striker. 1 of the 2 defensive midfielders would play box to box n the offer would sit deeper

Hope that makes sense - for both to work we need to sign a cdm
Cheers. I learned something today. :emoticon-0103-cool:

The problem though, if we move O9 into cm then we are leaving ourselves short at cb. If it was up to me, I'd try to sign a good quality cm rather than moving O9 there. He is a better CD than he is a cm. He is much better when the play is in front of him.

O'Nien suffers from the lack of a defensive midfield player imo, especially when Ekwah and Neil hang their legs instead of tackling.

O'Nien will always try to rescue a situation and sometimes makes himself look reckless, sometimes he actually is reckless.

O'Nien isn't chosen because a previous manager made him captain imo.

It seems that so many people look at o9s negatives - lack of height, pace, being rash - but he brings a lot to the team at centre half. His ability to read game is excellent, as is his passing and bringing ball out of.defence. also his tenacity and willingness to put his body on line. We don't concede a lot of goals so I don't know why we are so obsessed with changing a defensive unit that is decent

Spot on

I know things normally pick up in the last few days of the window but does anyone else feel this January has been very quiet so far for most teams? It’s usually a lot busier than it is currently…

Everton and Forest in financial bother, Man City and Chelsea being looked at, Reading being told to sort themselves out, etc etc etc.

Charlton are in a mess and loads of other clubs are struggling.

I agree, it's very quiet ... I think panic is setting in.

African nations n asian cup on at the minute as well so teams missing a lot of players

Teams are def worried about fpf, if the PL is quiet for transfers then it often filters down through the league

Same across Europe at the minute, the club i scout for are struggling to strengthen at the min as prices are pretty high. They are looking at the loan market but even thats tough

Because we currently aren’t good enough and he’s a weakness there. As is the DM role, as is the 9.

We don’t concede many goals for the same reason we don’t score lots of goals IMO - too many bodies clumped in the middle of the pitch. Neil and Ekwah both play somewhere between where a 6 and 8 should, Jobe drifts further and further back then Hume is drifting infield. When teams attack we normally get numbers back pretty well.

No but it makes him almost impossible to drop as someone mentioned earlier the only way we will get a proper centre half in is if the lad gets injured or suspended

Exclusive: Sunderland and Derby County interested in signing League Two goal machine

Notts County could now lose top goalscorer Macaulay Langstaff with Sunderland among the EFL clubs to take an interest in the striker.

County will not let Langstaff leave cheaply though, and it is believed they want around £1.5million to let him go – something which few clubs will be able to afford this month https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2024/01/...nterested-in-signing-league-two-goal-machine/

I've seen that said, loads of times, but I just don't believe it tbh ...

... they used to say the same about Cattermole but Bruce dropped him out of the team altogether.

I’m surprised he wasn’t in the FIFA team of the year after being likened to Baresi on here
