I believe it started with the Victorian 235 formation being

Which is was the most common formation when shirt numbers were introduced (or rather that was the way that all teams were drawn on published team sheets when shirt numbers were introduced)
This became in Herbert Chapman's WM

Which is why some times refer to centre backs as Centre Halfs because the traditional central half back was dropped back between the two full backs.

And then it became

In the 442. Another half back was dropped back between the full backs and that was the 6.

Edit: bloody numbers haven't come out they way I typed them but you get the idea.
Will you be getting a letter from the queen (king) next Birthday?

I'm glad someone asked about the numbers, I was thinking about the terminology today

1 - Easy...keeper
2 - LB
3 - RB
4 - CD
5 - CD
6 - CDM
7 - ?
8 - box to box midfielder
9 - out and out striker
10 - player behind striker
11 - winger

That about right?

2 is right back and 3 is left back according to our lass and shes always right <laugh>
 
For added saddo status, goalkeepers weren't required to wear different coloured shirts until 1909, which is why it looks like there are 11 outfield players in the Hemy painting in the reception at the SoL. Although they quite often did wear a different colour in international games.

The problem though, if we move O9 into cm then we are leaving ourselves short at cb. If it was up to me, I'd try to sign a good quality cm rather than moving O9 there. He is a better CD than he is a cm. He is much better when the play is in front of him.
It was more of using him as an option while we didn't have one I'd much rather sign an experienced CDM
 
It seems that so many people look at o9s negatives - lack of height, pace, being rash - but he brings a lot to the team at centre half. His ability to read game is excellent, as is his passing and bringing ball out of.defence. also his tenacity and willingness to put his body on line. We don't concede a lot of goals so I don't know why we are so obsessed with changing a defensive unit that is decent
That why I think playing in that CDM role may suit him better, so many people criticised Evans till he wasn't playing, it one of those positions that don't put you in the spotlight and people don't realise how good you are at doing the **** jobs till your not there. O'nien will do them all day long.
Also the things you've picked up on that might be the weaker part of his game won't be exploited as much if he also had 2 CB behind him
