Sunderland are signing Glentoran’s exciting young winger Rhys Walsh after making a late bid for the 17-year-old in the transfer window.

The Championship outfit have been big admirers of the teenager and decided to move for Walsh now rather than wait until the summer with other English clubs showing interest in the Glentoran Academy graduate.

Walsh, who relishes running at opposition defenders, has played for the Glens first team on several occasions this season and impressed with his speed and skill.

Oval boss Warren Feeney: “Obviously I have mixed feelings about losing Rhys as obviously he’s a player who I know would have gone on to do great things for Glentoran as he was already becoming a big favourite here.

"But on the other hand it’s a brilliant opportunity for Rhys as he’s joining a big club with a great record for developing young players and giving them their opportunity. Rhys is a very exciting player who can lift a game with his skill and directness, but he is also a strong and hard-working lad. I’m certain he’ll seize the opportunity and do very well there.

“Rhys is a perfect example of the strength of the Glentoran Academy. We currently have Johnny Russell and Aaron Wightman in the first team squad, Charlie Lindsay back from Derby County on loan and we have Casey Smyth out on loan to get experience with Dundela.

“Ollie Webber came through the Academy and young Lorcan Donnelly made his debut a couple of weeks ago. Rhys is the latest in a long line of our Academy players who have gone to good clubs in England so it’s a great place for developing young players.”

Walsh spent time with Sunderland last year and clearly made a positive impression.

At the Stadium of Light he will join compatriots Trai Hume, Daniel Ballard and Corry Evans, all key figures at the north east club managed by ex-Rangers supremo Michael Beale.

Midfielder Evans is currently recovering from a serious injury while defenders Ballard and Hume are first team regulars.

Hume, of course, joined Sunderland from Linfield and has become a big favourite with the supporters.

Both Hume and Walsh have the same agent Lee Mudd who helped facilitate their deals from the Irish League to Wearside.

i think where we have signed makes sense to have young one

you've got clarke
so weren't going to get another out and out winger like him so mundle is perfect for his under study

the LB from leeds played and can do a job so should hit the ground running who can then also move over to cb when cirkin is back
and then styles has more games in the league then any of are midfielders,

people keep mentioning the summer but most of them actually played men's football

and to be honest and i think seelt rusyn jobe auchie and pembele are already ready to step in

auchie and pembele have 80-100 games between them them in the top french league aswell

so when people keep saying we just got kids in the summer who weren't ready isn't true

People were saying that about Ba a month ago.

Aouchiche is ready but hasn't been able to dislodge Neil, Job or Ekwah ...

... doesn't mean he's just 'one for the future' especially when those three are around the same age.

Other supporters including myself can see those steps, they may not be the massive steps you and others want but the club is going forward

The steps some people want, whether they admit it or not are ...

1) Spend loads of money
2) Get to the PL
3) Spend loads more money

Every fanbase will have those. Some of us just want a few sensible signings to improve what we already have. Others get all weirdly defensive and whinge about anyone who dares to go against a decision the club makes.

I've seen people moan about moaners potentially moaning even before any moaning has begun. It's like Schroedinger's moaners <laugh>

Looking back who would you have wanted signing that you would class as "sensible"? I'm not "whinging" or "going all weirdly defensive" but I would be interested in what you perceive as sensible. And remember to give a better answer than "we need a centre forward"!

TBH I've not seen people acting weird unless putting a different point of view is weird ...

... I'd say the transfers this window have been sensible and will improve us.

i agree with what your saying but some fans aren't just 1 or two decisions, it's every single decision the club is making

the problem is and people don't like it but

we have a portion of are fans base that are very very toxic, and would rather have the club do **** then ever praise them, they club could 100% be better in some aspects, but it's also could be alot worse,

the same fans who always complain at every opportunity are the same ones saying SD and co put us back years, flogged off all are best young talent to keep the lights on,

3 years later after putting us back year and years

under KLD
we have one of the best under 18s team in the country
, have some very good young talent coming through
trying to keep are young talent

you keep hearing people say are model won't work but
we've went from 11th in league 1
to once again fighting for top 6 after every fan said the league was going to be much harder

we went from team with nothing

with a team worth between 80-100m

There's a fair bit of it on the hooky TV and it's always competitive. If anyone has watched it, it will not be a suprise as to how much Hume likes a tackle. They fly into challenges and the refs let a canny bit go tbh.

Don't think I've seen much of it if any at all, but I've seen hurling which is ****ing bonkers as well as being entertaining. Must be one of the most physical and dangerous sports out there.

Lewis Travis
Nat Phillips
Fabio Carvalho
Anass Zaroury
Kieffer Moore
Van Hooijdonk
Emmanuel Dennis

All loaned to champ clubs this window all realistic and all would improve us.

Just going off reports but do you really think paying 30k a week for Moore is realistic? Carvalho would be on a good whack as well

so do you think we should have gotten loans in and not played what we have? So we’d be in exactly the same place end of the season? We need to see if the lads we have in can step up and I think given game time they will.

A long time ago I worked in Belfast for a while. I worked with a guy who was a top end hurling player. He took me to watch some games and it was unreal. I absolutely loved it, fastest game I have ever seen and bloody brutal as well.

He wasnt a great big lad or anything. Wiry would be the word. Fast as you like though and he could take the hits and give them back. They didnt wear any padding or anything, it was mad.

The ground was called Casement Park I think. Mostly standing and it was a hell of a good atmosphere. I think it has been derelict for years now though sadly. Not sure where in Belfast they still play.

Brought back some memories typing this. Always wanted to go to Croke park for the finals but never did. Going to have a look into that again, adding it to my list.
