As a certain ex-manager once said, if you want guarantees buy a washing machine. :)

I believe Rohl has the ability and temperament to be a really good coach. It's clearly early days in his coaching career, but he must be doing something right to get Klopp's attention.

Yeah I'm by no means against Rohl so it's not meant as dig at him at all but I think Cooper is the better candidate.

My thinking is that if Rohl's career is about to take off now is the time to get him in. It may be too late a year or two down the line.

Well if his career takes off that much he probably wouldn't be here in two years anyway.

Regardless these two simply have to be the main candidates. I'd be slightly disappointed if it's anyone else.

TBF I think Rosenior would be a good fit as well but he's unlikely to leave Strasbourg.

Obviously Spors is in charge now and his approach is unknown, but Cooper just doesn’t feel like a Saints appointment.

Think he’ll only be considered if Rohl and Rosenior at least turn us down, and wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t considered even then.

Id be surprised if we find out who the manager is before June (officially anyway, might be media talk in May about it being a done deal etc) so we’ve got a while to wait

If one of the current top 3 in the Champ don’t go up and decide to change manager I can see Cooper going there, think that’s more likely than him coming here anyway.

Apart from that we are probably his only realistic destination domestically in the summer. Obviously not going back to Leicester and Ipswich won’t sack McKenna. But yeah I can’t see him coming to Saints at this point
 
One of the key considerations for me is getting the most out of players we need to have a good season if we are not only to go up but have a better shot at staying up afterwards. We have to learn lessons.

Shea Charles has developed into a key player for Sheffield Wednesday and I think Edozie, Archer etc (if they stay) will be better suited to his style than Cooper - who has already proven able to get teams up then buy a whole new team (great if you get it right but I have absolutely 0 faith we would!)

I'd be pretty happy with either, though - just keen to get permanent manager in place to start planning asap

For me personally, it's between Cooper and Rohl... and I would go Cooper.

Rohl is too much of an unknown, and although he probably has a higher ceiling, this in itself can bring issues. He will either flop as he isn't ready yet, or he will do really well and move to a bigger club pretty quickly anyway. Cooper has the experience to get us and up, develop the youth system and do a half decent job in the Prem. He probably wouldn't get picked off by other clubs either, so it feels like we could build something long term with him. After all the instability of late, i feel this is important now.

Having said all that, i think the club will go for a Rohl-type, young, forward thinking coach. I would be happy with this appointment, albeit not my first choice.

This from the Athletic this morning:

"Sport Republic’s top target to replace Martin was Danny Rohl. Rohl previously spent six months at St Mary’s in 2018-19 as Hasenhuttl’s assistant, but protracted talks with Sheffield Wednesday collapsed after a compensation package could not be agreed."

So confirmation we did go in for him back in December.

Completely agree with this. I'm really not fussed about a managers "ceiling" Have we not learnt anything? I'd really prefer to recruit someone who's ready now and likely to do a job for us rather than someone who might be attractive to a bigger club in 2 seasons time.

Given that, SR'S entire model for the club is buy cheap with a view to selling, it's likely to be Rohl.

Double yes. What will the Rohl fans view be when we start the season with 10 points from 8 games. Reading the thread he seems to be the magic fix, will restore broken players and have us March to champions or automatic promotion. I admire the optimism, but think things are going to be a lot tougher than a lot of you
