Interesting that he's gone back to France given the reasons for coming over when for us. I know it didn't go well with us, but thought he'd give it a go at another UK club before going back.

Auxerre are one of the few French teams whose ground I have visited. It is a lovely city , full of historic buildings and with the modern stadium housed in a sports centre just outside of the town. They have a formidable reputation but I think that they would be top of League One / bottom of Championship in UK. I can see the appeal of moving to this city yet I would argue that Auxerre are not in the case class as Saints.

Auxerre used to be a big presence in French football, they have a strong and loyal fan base. The thing that I never understood about Still is his previous management style was very similar to Tonda's but for some reason he stuck with a system that got us relegated. It will be interesting to see how he sets up Auxerre.

I think the biggest issue with Still was that he wasn't assertive enough. I think he's admitted himself he wanted the players to move away from Martinball and think for themselves in match situations but he didn't realise he needed to break the habit of endless passing by telling them what he DID want them to do. I reckon he was led by the players a bit too, I remember a few comments about things like Ryan Fraser's preferred playing position which made me think players might be dictating terms too much, and I wonder about transfers as well. I doubt he'd ever had a budget like ours and, while we'll never know for sure, my guess is that Tonda was clearer about the type of players he wanted us to sign.

I think it was he was wedded to playing five at the back which meant that players like Azaz and Fellows were never playing in their best positions and our play was too deep much of the time and we were losing the ball too far back and vunerable.
The three CBs were very poorly organised and it was almost "after you Claude" defending leaving it too each other.
Fellows, Azaz and Leo never once played as a three behind the striker because of the system he employed.

Still definitely had faults, and I think sticking with a back 3 was the worst of them, but I also thought he was an unlucky manager. My memory is shot to pieces but I seem to remember that our players hit the woodwork on several occasions, when it would have been easier to score, when he was in charge.
