Nah, he let his friendliness cloud his judgement, especially with the recruitment side of things. It was fine in the Championship when he got Manning and Downes in and strengthened the XI, but it continued and did nothing to make us better
I wouldn’t trust him at all If someone said we are hiring Martin for next season and regardless of promotion or not he would be only here for one season, I might consider it.
Maybe I’ll feel differently over time but right now I’m in a state of “it really doesn’t matter” about who we go for. I guess as long as it’s not so bad as to go down again…. But two main reasons for this: - I strongly believe the skills needed to get a team promoted from the Championship are very different from those needed to then make that team competitive in the Premier League. I’m not convinced any manager we’ll be linked to have both of these skill sets (so either we don’t go up, or we do but end up same scenario again) - I also strongly believe that after two seasons in a row where the 3 promoted teams go beck down, the other 17 Premier League clubs have now opened up a significant gap in ability (both footballing and financial) that may well never be closed. Apart from anomalies (Man City?) I think there is a very real chance that the three promoted clubs are always cut adrift and is that really what we want to be a part of every other year ?
Just taken a look at Saintsweb and saw this comment from a Wednesday fan which is interesting and the first time I've seen any criticism: Danny has worked to a certain extent with one hand tied behind his back with this owner but also don't believe he is the messiah we perhaps thought. We are on course for our worst home record for 50 years and a good run of away results have really kept us away from a relegation struggle. We seem to have very slow starts in games and have relied on a few comebacks, which in itself is a good thing. Also he brought in 9 players in the Summer and very few have been a success as well as wasting the money we had on Ike Ugbo who has no goals or assists in 30 games. The team are still very reliant on the old guard of Bannan and Windass etc. Do we want to keep DR - yes, but surprised other teams are looking at him as they are.
Wagner is the only one of that list I would be 100% against. Lampard has done well at Coventry, Rosenior has done great work in France and Rohl is my number one choice. Really don't want Wagner though.
He's been working with a League One squad in the Championship ever since he took over. TBH it's a minor miracle that they haven't flirted with relegation at all.
I also think we can do better. He's doing well at Coventry but I've not been particularly impressed with him elsewhere and it remains to be seen if he continues to do well there.
There's something about Rohl which makes me uneasy. Another one who hasn't really achieved much and doesn't have any PL experience (if we get back) Don't want Rosenior either Cooper has to be the obvious choice, surely?
