My own view is that making people vote wouldn't make much difference. It might possibly boost the "protest" parties. My main concern now, maybe paradoxically is the collapse of the Lib Dems and the effect on the non Right vote. If they are going to reform then Labour really needs to withdraw candidates from all the seats that they lost this time in a deal that allows them a clear run in return for them doing the same. That is my worry, combined with the paucity of candidates for the Labour leadership. Candidates like Liz Kendall are a joke.

On a personal note I had my house valued yesterday and if I sell I intend jumping ship to France. It's an idea I've had for a while now and this is the push I need. I'll probably arrive just as the FN take over!

You best make that move now Cruyff because when the UK leaves the EU it won't be that easy to emigrate to Europe <ok>

God forbid KIO. if we leave the European Community then we are well and truly f*cked and will forever be America's poodle (more than we are now!)
We will lose inward investment and a no vote will push the Scottish National campaign over the line to full independence as the Scots will definitely want to stay in. The rest of us will then be left with a permanent Tory cum UKIP based Government and any kind of social justice will be gone forever. Don't listen to Farage KIO, we need a sensible debate but we have to see both sides of the picture. Just saying no is very easy and potentially very dangerous.

Actually Thurnby that makes for another good debate would we actually be better off as the 51st American State?

As far as Scotland is concerned I reckon that we'd be far better off without them, financially anyway. What exactly would we lose except the Union Flag ?

Phew the possibility of another political thread, well let's see! I know what you mean about the Scots in some ways and I am getting more than a tad fed up with their muscle flexing and permanent whinging and I bloody hate Salmond. Having said all of that, I genuinely believe that we are better as a United Kingdom and I resent the Nationalists for the potential division they have caused. I like the differing cultures and historically (in more recent times anyway) it has been the source of good banter between the two nations. Just now it is becoming nasty and the scenes in Glasgow against Jim Murphy were quite appalling and a sorry sign of things deteriorating. America is a frightening country and you only have to move away from the coastal states before you hit places that you would genuinely not want to be in. The rise of the Tea party, the endless evangelists and UFO spotters are just three things that make me shudder off the top of my head. Their left wing party (democrats) sit on the right of our Conservatives and their overall insular view of the world shapes their limited views. Sorry KIO, if we become the 51st state, to quote the Dragons I'm out!

I was only asking the question Thurnby, don't panic my friend it ain't gonna happen (hopefully) <laugh>

Sorry KIO, I think I broke out in a sweat and felt that I needed to put a marker down in case the Yankees saw the thread and started climbing aboard. I think as a final point (and then I will shut up) you only have to look at the relative behaviour of the respective fans at the Ryder Cup. Again, they are an absolute disgrace - IN THE HOLE!

Watching the Players Championship over the weekend, and as Sergio Garcia teed off in the play-off on Sunday night one idiot screamed out "MASHED POTATO!!!!"

Never heard that one before, what's that rubbish all about?

I can't think of anything worse than becoming the 51st state, I'd think I'd rather have Nigel Farage as PM

I think the EU referendum will be extremely interesting to say the least. I am fascinated as to what line the major parties will take - one presumes that Lab/Lib/SNP are all very much on the staying in side of the debate and UKIP on the other side but who will lead the move to leave the EU? I genuinely don't see Cameron lobbying for an out vote - I can see him gaining something in the coming negotiations and then using this to pat himself on the back and say to the voters look what I have achieved by keeping us within the EU. If the out campaign is led by Farage and some of the right of the Tory party surely it can't prevail?

I think if the PM can get some sort of concession regarding migrants coming in and not being entitled to benefits then I reckon we'll see the wind taken out of Farage's sails somewhat. I live in the hope that most people in the UK are fundamentally decent and would not take issue with someone seeking to better themselves coming over here to work and contribute to our society and we do have a fantastic, diverse society in the UK of which we can be rightly proud.

I didn't want to vote tory because they are evil scum.
I didn't want to vote Labour because Tony Blaire took us into a pointless fake war on terror that will never end.
I didn't vote Lib Dem because Clegg lied through his teeth about uni fees .

I have no trust in any of them not even Chuka Umanna.

This isn't a remotely anti -immigrant post because I agree 100% with them trying to better themselves. Unfortunately an inevitable concomitant of this is the forcing down of UK pay rates. Average pay in Poland is around £750 a month compared to £2200 in the UK.so a Polish worker on minimum wage is in clover. The winners from all this are the employers. They are asparagus picking near me and the farmer is paying minimum wage less a very extravagant allowance for a caravan to sleep in and a rusty Transit ride to work. Interestingly they had Tory posters in the fields.

Employment/minimum wage isn't my area, but I'm pretty sure that's not allowed...
