So Wenger WAS sacked

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43896201

Thought as much.
He made a big song and dance for years about how he would never break a contract yada yada.
I entertained the idea that maybe he had made an exception for the good of Arsenal, but turns out I was giving him too much credit, he was told to **** off....

Yep.

It's looks like Wenger was sacked by the board.

Such an ignoble end to a once-great manager.

All the plaudits are now rendered complete bollocks, of course.

The fans hounded their greatest ever manager out of the club.

That is the long and short of it.

Shame on Gooners!

Or he could be hinting that he wanted to go last season which is why he never signed the contract until very late. Maybe he was begged to stay because they had no plans for a replacement?

Possibly.

Hadn't thought of that.

Unlikely don't you think?

He's a bit of a limpet.

He was getting a lot of **** from supporters and press which to me suggests he was really not going to sing that contract and go out on a cup win.

Yeah possibly.

I personally think he's so stubborn he would not go until pushed.

That's why its taken about 3 years for them to pull the trigger.

Agreed.
I dont think they wanted to sack him, they were probably hoping that his advancing age and the pressure from fans would eventually cause him to step down of his own volition.
Guess they underestimated how much of a stubborn old goat Wenger can be, so eventually they had to sit him down and tell him he is "leaving"

I'm sure this is how it went down. I said that Kroenke's use of the word "difficult" suggested he had been sacked. It was only Wenger, their board and a small minority of fans (Ty basically) that didn't realise his time had been up for some time now. Him holding on has only delayed the recovery, so he goes with my best wishes.
Good luck to Wenger at Chelsea too I say!

That's exactly how I see it.

It's a shame for him as the years of stubbornness have altered a lot of Arsenal fans opinions of him and made him a laughing stock for the press and rivals.

There’s talk of Everton making a play for him, after the club’s snide survey of the fans revealed that fans want shot of him.

Would Wenger be a good fit for Everton?

"After reaching agreement about my departure, I was happy for the club to decide when to announce. I wish to make it clear the timing of the announcement was right," he said.
