For simplicity, let's say I was born in Hebden Bridge in 1958. I love football & wanted to support a professional football team because of this love of the game. There are possibly 20-25 professional teams within the environs (50-60 miles) of Hebden Bridge, none of which I can realistically reach as a kid or for a number of years for lack of fiinancial assets/income. Lo and behold, throughout the 60's & 70's the only exposure I get is through the TV, primarily Liverpool and Manchester United broadcast games. A few more on the radio ( Spurs, Notts Forest, Leeds and Derby). There's still nowt close to Hebden Bridge. My dad gets a job in a coal mine 20 miles north of Newcastle in '68, and the family is dragged off to live up there. Where's my home town club allegiance and identity ? I made my choice as a 10 year old. It seems not too many have moved around from the cloistered district of of Hull.
Rise above it would be my suggestion. You may live an extra week & see City get to the Champions League final.
1. I do rise above it , in one ear out the other . 2. I would expect City to win that final and not just get there . However , sheep are plentiful in Wales , but walk the streets of Hull wearing Liverpool, , Man U , Leeds and Arsenal shirts .
You could have picked any West Yorkshire club, or Newcastle, they’d all have been clubs you had a connection to, it would be deciding to support Man United or Chelsea that would be based on nothing other them winning more often.
But 99% of people dont have this situation . They spend all their lives living where they where born . So to support another City or club over your own to me is bizarre. And to pour derision over your own City is even more baffling . I remember when I was taxi driving . I picked a guy up from Masters Bar in Hull to take to Anlaby High rd . He was about 70 and as we drove past the KC he looked at the stadium and said Hull City , I hate them bastards .. I've had plenty of arguments over the years with people pulling City to pieces.
For simplicity let's say I was born in Hull like generations before me, not Northampton, Dewsbury, Canada, Bangkok or Hebden Bridge but Hull, and I liked football and wanted a football team to support, who should I support? OK I chose Hull City AFC. Then I grew up, continued to live and work in Hull and had children, who should my children support? OK they followed in their fathers footsteps and chose Hull City AFC. Then one evening I had to justify these simple life choices on a Hull City AFC messageboard to other football supporters!!!!
I’ve not questioned why you support Hull or asked you to justify your life choices, I did originally question why the hatred by so many. I don’t hate any other set of fans, there will be Leeds supporters I don’t get on with but I’d hope I’d judge people on how I found them rather than the team they support. Anyway, it’s your forum, I’ll leave you all to it
There you go. Everyone seems to have made their own informed choices in your tale. There are certain posters on this thread/forum who insist anyone from Hull should not support other clubs and make assumptions/generalizations that they do it for glory. Where is the open mindedness in that stance ? As I said in my opening post on this sub-topic - it's a blinkered viewpoint as they have no clue about the source/rationale behind the choice of club they made.
If it's not done for glory why are they not picking Rochdale,Scunthorpe ,Gillingham etc in large numbers .
Not acceptable to pour derision is strange I agree. Tell me, should I support, in any way, shape of form, the pro football team Toronto FC since I've lived here for close to 49 years, as well as support Hull City AFC ?
Simple, they have not been exposed to them via any form of "visible" media. Have never seen or heared of their players, managers, history etc etc. Why would anyone be aware of the band "Silkie" as opposed to the "Stones" in the '60's unless they had been there ?
More likely stop inviting the free-loading bastards who come round on a Sat morning to watch football
From the triumvirate, more likely Hell ! (I've been to Hell several times. Just a few miles north of Trondheim in Nord Trondelag in Norway). That reminds me, "Last Tango in Halifax" is on tonight. Better get onto IPlayer .
Entirely up to you, it would be completely understandable if you did. My brother in law is a Leeds fan (originally from Leeds), but is currently a season ticket holder at Arsenal, as he lives in London, his kids were born in London and his son supports Arsenal (and Leeds, because of his dad). All perfectly understandable. There’s plenty of reasons why people end up supporting clubs, it’s just picking the club you support based on nothing other than their success that misses out on so much of what supporting a football club is all about.
