Actually, perhaps the EU has an opportunity here. If they refuse an extension - and there is absolutely nothing unreasonable in their so doing - then the ONLY course open to the govt - based on the votes in the H of C - is to withdraw Article 50. Of course that does assume the govt. is still capable of governing - not a given, based on their behaviour over the last 2 years. What else do you expect though from such a bunch of selfish self-interested people as the Tory party ?The government has stated, "People are fed up with Parliament's failure to take a decision and the PM shares their frustration."
Parliament did take a decision, not once but twice, that the deal the PM came back with was not acceptable. The votes were not even close, but record breaking margins. Parliament also took the decision that the UK should not leave the EU without a deal, another quite clear vote. As the PM has said that this is the only deal, she should now take on board what Parliament has said, admit that she has failed, and not try to blame others. She needs to withdraw Article 50, and let us see where that takes us next. It could be to another vote in the country, or a general election, but to carry on trying to get this measure through, something deeply unpopular for different reasons depending on your viewpoint, is not what Parliament has said should happen. The longer she tries to cling to power by just being stubborn will not be in the interests of the country. It is not the failure of Parliament, but the failure of this government.
The only way to uphold what is left of Britain's tottering democratic system is to allow the British people a second vote on this. We have seen that the government thinks it perfectly ok. to require Parliament to vote several times on exactly the same issue, yet they don't allow the people to do the same. Democracy is an ongoing thing, not frozen in time, which means being able to change your mind, rather than being paralyzed by the result of one days voting nearly three years ago. There is nothing undemocratic in asking the people for a second opinion which is much closer to the event than the first one was - I'm sorry but anyone who does not understand the logic of that is either stupid (which I don't believe you are) or so blinded by the propaganda which they surround themselves with that there really is no hope. The PM is doing exactly the right thing by limiting any extension to 3 months. This will ensure whatever happens the UK will leave the EU by June. The government has brought forward the plan for no deal, this is looking increasingly the most likely option.
Theresa May has reiterated the 2016 referendum result must be upheld, this is imperative to uphold our democratic system.

Sorry to come back on this Frenchie but if any Tory MPs are ashamed of being in their party then they should leave it and join the independent group, because one of the best ways of ending this mess of a government is to end its majority - talk alone about 'being ashamed' is not enough.Today we witnessed one of the most extraordinary days in the life of Parliament with a PM going to the house and saying that the crisis that the country finds itself in was none of her doing, but the fault of the MP's. She admitted that despite telling them over a hundred times that we would leave on the 29th of March, that she had now requested an extension to the end of June. She was attacked from every side of the chamber, with some of the most pointed questions coming from her own benches. Even at the time of the poll tax rebellion, I cannot remember a party being as split as the current Tory party is. Michael Foot was derided for the leadership of his party, but he looks statesman like compared to the current government ministers.
Corbyn asked the questions that people would like to know answers to, but received not a single insight as to what was going on, just personal attacks on him. It can be little wonder that so many are totally turned off by politics. And to hear a Tory MP saying this evening he was ashamed to be a member of the party shows just how low our democracy has fallen led by this bunch of political pygmies.

I agree cologne. But for an ex-cabinet Minister to say such a thing shows just how far this government has fallen.
Not at all, the ex minister in question knows he has annoyed his local party by his extreme behaviour and was likely to be deselected as their Tory candidate. He would do anything and say anything to thwart Brexit. He can join his small band of Tory oddballs in the new middle fringe group until he is sent packing at the next election. A crash course on democracy might straighten him out but sacked ex ministers are usually bitter about being rejected.

Agreed.. But the tories can't throw her out as they had a vote of confidence in her last year! .. And they won't agree to labour demand for a GE.. Gridlock eh!EU not going to agree to the extension Mrs May wants?
How can she carry on - must have lost the confidence of so many MPs now.
I can assure you that she has never been on my side!"I am on your side" she tells the people. Which side is that? Leave or remain?
