By choosing Antwerp or Rotterdam they don't have to pump any money anywhere SH. By handing out grants they are simply reacting to decisions made elsewhere. It also makes environmental sense because bigger ships (and therefore fewer) can be used - both Antwerp and Rotterdam can take ships of up to 16 metres draught and 15,000 TEU + capacity, currently only Le Havre can manage these.

The trade from Ireland is likely to small relatively small regular amounts not requiring large vessels. This rather smacks at being a political decision.

It doesn't matter how you look at it, the EU is making plans to avoid trade grinding to a halt in the UK. It is the right thing to do, especially when you see that it is all part of an integrated transport route. Calais will still be the gateway for goods for the UK, and they have received plenty of funding from the UK for security measures. Meanwhile increased sailings between Dublin and Cherbourg have been announced, reducing the need for quite so many lorries to catch two ferries.

I would expect many UK exporters that currently use Dover to try other routes. They should expect the French to make the process as difficult as possible for a while. Hopefully those exporters from the EU suffer just as much until common sense prevails.

The WB Yeats is a brand new ferry to be run by Irish Ferries when the German shipbuilder FSG gets round to delivering it. This will provide additional sailings direct from Eire to France. It should have arrived a couple of months ago, so all part of a long term plan.

Do they know the French strikers block the ports with regularity? Maybe they should pipe the Guinness directly to the Spanish coast mainland.

UK unemployment levels have again dropped, this time to a 43 year low at 4%. Despite the project fear nonsense the UK economy continues to disappoint the knockers with superb job creation and higher growth. The NIESR expects further improvement in growth in the pipeline. These good economic figures bode extremely well for when we leave the EU. Those EU countries with high unemployment rates should learn from the UK model. Perhaps that is what Macron is trying to emulate?

In addition to these good financial stats is the news there has been 'a substantial fall in the number of people on zero-hours contracts' from the Office for National Statistics.

Something for you to chew over...

I would love to know from SH how he thinks the French unemployment statistics are compiled. Does he know the different groupings that are used? Is a student still at school included? Is a retired person included? Does he know how to compare them with the UK figures? What parts of the country are or are not covered. If he would like to give some detailed information it might help us.

It is for the French government to decide how it manages information supplied. There are international organisations including some for the whole of the EU that are satisfied comparisons are fair. These often put France very near the top of the unemployment chart with the UK near the bottom.

If your think France is treated particularly unfairly you should take it up with them.

I don't think that France is treating anyone unfairly. They are just a lot more honest about who should be included. Clearly you don't have a clue about the differences in how the statistics are compiled or you would have been able to supply some answers, which you didn't.

It is much better to leave it up to the experts, all put France as one of the worst at tackling it's high unemployment problem. Macron has a five year plan to reduce the level down to double the UK rate, not very adventurous or perhaps it shows a lack of confidence in his reforms succeeding?
