Yes, because if Giroud (who is not a donkey) is injured or off form, we can play an actual forward instead of a winger up front. Pretty obvious really.
After everything Wenger has said the past week, he's now spend 100 million since last season what a ****ing twat
Well this is interesting. CB: Mustafi is a full German International. Still young with a lot of potential to improve. DM/CM: Xhaka. Tenacious and technically excellent. Should be a big boost in midfield. CF: Perez. This one has come out of nowhere but he should offer us something a little different. To be fair on Wenger - these may not be big names but he has actually addressed the three weaknesses in the squad.
Mustafi looks the business. <OK> Perez looks weak sauce and frankly, ****e. Pay £17m for a striker these days and you know what you'll get? A £17m striker! He could prove me wrong though, and as someone said , at least he gives you options. So it ain't all bad. Though it seems to me another case of Wenger trying to resolve things on the cheap
-------------Cech--------- Bellerin---Kosc--Mustafi--Monreal ---------Xhaka---Cazorla------- Walcott-----Ozil------Sanchez -------------Giroud-------- -----------Ospina-------- Debuchy---Mert--Gabriel--Gibbs ------------Coq----Ramsey----- Oxocube----Wilshere----Welbeck -----------------Perez---------- With Chambers, Holding and El Neny too. Not saying those are the positions or first choices or whatever, but showing we have some decent depth throughout the squad at the moment if these signings happen.
I know its not a big name signing but I've got a good feeling about Perez. He's quick and can beat a defender but ultimately he's a tenacious forward and that makes me think he should do well in this league. Be interesting to see what he can do with Ozil, Xhaka and Cazorla supplying him.
Do we think he is similar to Vardy ? AW obviously had a plan when he bid for Vardy so perhaps Lucas (preferred name) has same attributes, and when was last time we had a speedy CF ?
We've strengthend well and it should make us fairly competitive. The jury is out on Perez and could come out decent, but I have a feeling this is the only thing he'll end up being. His stats are good (last season) but not overwhelming and he's in his prime years which is bonus. It gives us another option from Giroud and allows us to attack quickly as a unit. Will he be the signing we've been after or will he turn out to be a mediocre bargain basement signing, this season will tell us. Also, does Wenger still have any magic left in finding a gem from nowhere? We will see with Perez.
Happy with Mustafi. Rarely seen him play but you can't be a mug if you play for a Germany. Perez probably the most underwhelming signing since we wasted money on Welbeck. More squad filler. This doesn't strengthen our squad, it makes it bloated. We already had a massive squad and with Campbell out but another two more players in it makes it even more overblown. Wenger needs to cut the deadwood.
Cech Ospina Martinez Bellerin Jenkinson Koscielny Mustafi Paulista Holding Monreal Gibbs Xhaka Coquelin Cazorla Ramsay Sanchez Oxlade Ozil Wilshere Welbeck Iwobi Giroud Perez Keep: Chambers, Gnabry Sell: Walcott, Mertesacker, Elneny, Debuchy, Sanogo.
The problem with deadwood is it gives the new manager coming in headaches to get rid of them, especially when they are on high wages. Example cases were Bendner, Denilson etc, they were hard to get rid. Klopp had this issue with too many mediocre players that weren't good enough and bought for big money. He's had to waste a lot of time culling the players and trying to bring his own in.
I would keep Mert and Elneny as they are good backups, the rest should be moved on. I would also add OXO to the pile and Welbeck narrowly keeps him place based on workrate. OXO has been given plenty of chances, more so than most players (namely Campbell), but has failed to consistently maintain a good level. He doesn't offer enough in terms of assists or goals in that position.
We already have CM backup, we don't need Xhaka, Coquelin AND Elneny. He was the most pointless signing ever if all we were going to do was sign Xhaka the year after anyway.
While on one hand it's good to see Wenger actually spend money, and strengthen the positions we needed strenghening- CB, DM and Striker which is obviously good. But realistically we were liked with strikers of the standard of Griezmann, Higuain and then Lukaku and Vardy and finally Lacazette. Also we could have gone for a AM/WF instead - Mkhitaryan would have been perfect. So to sign Perez is distinctly underwhelming- as Cini says it feels like the Welbeck signing - an ok squad player but not the quality we need or were originally aiming for. You compare our strikeforce to our rivals and it's severly lacking! Mustafi (sp?) seems a great signing though I haven't seen him play - well i think i did in the euros but I wasn't concentrating on him. But why it took so long, seemingly as we needed to keep some money back to dedicate to a striker signing - indicating a significant striker signing- then we sign Perez for £17m. If we are scrabbling around for £17m while our rivals are spending £50 odd mill on players then we are in trouble!
