I think Messi has his father as an agent and he seems to do quite well, there is another famous footballer who's brother is his agent but I can't remember who that is.
It comes down to if you're a good enough player, you'll get the right move. I think there's probably as many agents who've held players careers back, as have advanced them. The other side is, there's players like Falcao who seem happy enough to not advance their career as long as they're getting paid huge amounts.

Not everyone's parents understands what the difference between a good deal & bad deal is or how to force clubs into giving them a better deal than they are getting. Parents are just as likely to get starstruck and get conned into signing a bad deal as the player is. That's why they usually sign with an agent, because a parent doesn't have confidence in their ability to negotiate a good deal so they turn to agents who promise the player the world.
I hear what you're saying but from a players perspective at some point common sense would kick in if it was obvious they were missing out by having an incompetent advisor.

I think parents/family have one thing over agents, they will strive to make sure their relative is happy as well as paid fairly.

You've got to admit though the most likely circumstance of getting an agent instead of a parent to take charge of your dealings will result in better career prospects and the possibility of squeezing that little bit more money out of clubs. And it dramatically reduces your chances of signing a **** deal.

Notable players using family members
Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, David Alaba, Fernandinho, Arjen Robben, Claudio Marchisio, Ilkay Gundogan, Neymar (dad), Juan Mata (dad), Francesco Totti (qualified), Eden Hazard (no agent)

I found this list. Few good players in there. But lets remember the argument isn't that you can't be a top player without an agent, its that you leave yourself at a disadvantage early in your career when it comes to contract discussions if you have someone who isn't 100% clued up on business deals negotiating your deals.

You can but it's like this. You better have the brains to seek professional advice and I'm fully sure Mr hazard didn't sign anything before it was read over by professional.

Like I said keane used a solicitor... if you have a parent, a solicitor and an accountant engaged you can I'm sure get by fine without aidy ward.

I don't have a massive problem with agents - they're a necessary evil. The key is to build good relationships with these agents so you can increase your chances of getting their clients. Chelsea are brilliant at this and have great links with Jorge Mendes.

Nice to see Ibe being represented by family - I just hope the club don't take advantage.

Didn't see it reported in the papers but Mario cut short his bereavement leave (his father passed away) to come back to the club and train.

Stoke signing Johnson is karma for them
Beating us 6-1 <whistle>
Had to laugh at this

Potters boss Mark Hughes said of the England international: "He will be a fantastic addition. He's a talented defender who also chips in with goals."

Defender :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Goals <laugh> 8 in 160 games, last one November 2014
