If Tuchel fails, which he probably will as Southgate seemingly failed despite getting to two finals and two semis - what will the FA do next? It's got nothing to do with being patriotic or anything like that but England should be embarrassed to employ a non- English coach with the amount of money in the English game and money spent on georges Park etc. There needs to be a consistent approach through the age groups with everything aligned but this just seems a desperate attempt to try and win something. I'm not saying Tuchel is good or bad but it seems misguided and a kick in teeth to all the other English coaches.
Who was the last English manager to win anything of note? Not a pop at anyone just genuinely curious Redknapp with Pompey in 2008 is the most recent I can think of
There no English managers of any standard. Only Potter and Howe have any credit in bank and they haven’t done anything of real note in England. It’s a great appointment. He isn’t scared to make big calls and he knows how to change things when failing. He will do for me.
These are the pertinent points for me. Tuchel is a good appointment, probably the best appointment we could have made. I think if you genuinely care about English football, and not just about England winning a trophy, appointing a foreign coach has to be a concern though. Those concerns are nothing to do with Tuchel himself, or his particular nationality, but more to do with how English football is run and how it sees itself. It should be a concern that there aren't more English candidates. English coaches are often considered to be substandard to foreign coaches (we had that argument on here during our own head coach search) but is that really the case? Could it be that clubs preferring foreign coaches means that English coaches aren't given the opportunity to prove they're good enough for England? And if foreign coaches really are better, why aren't we producing better ones ourselves?
Completely different situations one is money driven to the point you could have an entire squad management made up of foreigners.. as for the National team.. should only consist of citizens of that country..
Someone needs to step up and show it mate, regardless of nationality. Potter is the closest, he went too soon to the wrong club. I think he’d have done a great job at United, or Spurs, but Chelsea, for all its settling now was absolute basket case at the time. I don’t think it’s damaged him really, but it has left him still to prove he can handle the big players and expectations. Howe, he does well. I think he’s been very fortunate up the road as they are rarely impressive, but his work at Bournemouth is ridiculously underestimated. After that there isn’t a sniff. McKenna is English born I suppose, but it’s not like English gaffers haven’t had jobs. They just haven’t done the business at the top end. The punditry route seems the preference with English players after retirement.
On a personal note I'm pretty ecstatic we have hired a German. I like the nation. I like the people. The war was horrible but it is time to move on, it has been for maybe 30 or 40 years. I understand some don't see it that way but I do.
I agree but I am willing to bet large sections of the English fan base don't see it that way and that there are large sections of the media who will be happy to stoke them up into a fury.
Yeah, of course. As I've already said on this thread, the whole thing leads to people taking up two opposed stances, leaving no room for a sensible discussion of it. Which I find frustrating.
There is no intelligent discussion around this imo. The idea that any one country can take its' various players, plying their trade in numerous different coaching environments, over a series of very short time frames,a matter of days very often, and mould them into a cohesive winning unit,is fanciful in the extreme. One or two brilliant individual players will carry it through if you're lucky enough to have them, otherwise,it'll fail. It only ever works in once in a lifetime circumstances, often on home soil, and Tuchel won't make a ha'peth of difference. International football is ****ed. Much better to scrap it and have a worldwide club competition every 4 years instead. Then we really would know who the best was.
