I watched a fascinating encounter between two top sites who basically couldn't break each other down. For me, I was watching the movement, passing, marking and general play of two if the top sites in England. I was watching to see what either manager would do to change the game either by subtle changes or substitutions. I wanted to see how they passed and moved, to see how Rooney played, to try and see how they played in comparison to Saints. I wanted to see if I could learn anything from the game. I was trying to assess how these top players were using the ball and to see f I thought they had used the best option when they got it.

I didn't turn on the television tonight expecting to see 6 goals or the ball pumped from one end of the pitch to the other.

The game was not an "exciting spectacle", however from a technical and tacticAl point of view it was fascinating. Football does not have to be about goals, goals, goals. Yes, I like that but when it's man united v Chelsea, I expect to see some quality control, good passing, tough marking, excellent movement and a tight game: that's what I saw tonight.

If its not for you, fine, try Northampton v Newport. That was 3-1 locally to me the other week and absolutely dire football. I'd rather watch united v Chelsea thanks.

If that's what floats your boat fair play mate. I'm just a geezer looking for a couple of goals and a few reds.

I used to watch a lot of football...now only really interested in Saints. I do watch Europa and European Cup matches because I can side with the English side, but have little interest in any two random PL sides because I just don't care enough.

This is pretty much how I feel too.

No. I wasn't indignant, FLT. We'll just have to blame the medium we are using there. You couldn't hear the snarl I made while typing [I'm kidding ;) ]

To answer your question a little better. There was a time when I was a football fan. I used to be fully engaged in whatever a football match threw up, because I was interested in the sport and the contest. I think I've mentioned several times now that I'm no longer a football fan. I am a Saints fan. There's a difference. Saints can do anything they like in a match and I will be interested. If another team or two do the same then it is up to my mood of whim whether I am interested or not. I'm certainly not interested in the two teams who played each other this evening so I just wanted them to entertain me. I wanted an end-to-end contest, of which even the most disinterested must know both teams are capable of. It didn't happen and I expressed my opinion on it. If that grated with you, or spoilt your enjoyment in any way then I am truly sorry. I would never wish to be the cause of offence to anyone on here.

I wonder what Mark Chapman will say..? I have just enough curiosity to watch. But mainly because they might make a mention of one of the best attacks in the Premier League. :)

To be fair TSS, you have said that before and I had forgotten. I do respect that you are a saints fan rather than a football fan. I'm not offended and I could have used anyone of several people's posts tonight; if I had remembered your views, I would certainly have replied to someone else. As it is, a couple of people are questioning my view on the game, so hopefully here will be some good debate on it.

Keep smiling :)

That's fair enough fella and nothing wrong with that. I sometimes look for that too, but I do also like to "view"'a game not a s a football fan sometimes when there are two good teams playing.

Would you take saints to win the next 18 home games 1 nil, with few chances and then win enough away points to finish top? I would. Football is funny. I can at times claim to be a bit of a purist, but with 1 minute to go and saints winning, they can stick it out the ground if it means we'll win :)

I'm finding myself feeling that way. Up to and including last season, I'd watch a game of football pretty much every day, because there's always something on if you know where to look. So far this season, I'm just not feeling it. I still look forward to Southampton matches as much as ever, but while I've been watching a couple of other games, I'll often get bored and switch off. Wonder how long it'll be until I stick to just Southampton, MOTD and finals.

I'd like to pretend I wouldn't, and would prefer entertaining games, but I can't - realistically I'd definitely take it.

Before we were premier league, I'd watch a game between a top side and a weaker side and always support the weaker side because of the underdog bull**** that I love for some reason, but now the chances are the weaker side will be competing with Saints, so it's better off for the top side to win. Still, Cardiff vs the mancs was quite satisfying

What notable event occured?

Terry put in one of the greatest central defensive performances in Premier League history as far as i'm concerned. He was rarely more than five yards from Van Persie, who consequently had his quietest game in a United shirt yet. Away from home, against the most in form and ruthless centre forward in the world, and he kept him quiet all game. Cahill was excellent too, but Terry's faultless performance was a pleasure to watch, for me anyway.

I generally support the underdogs. Last year, not so much. This season, I'm back to supporting them again, because someone needs to knock our competition for the title down a peg.

Same here, when we play Chelsea I'll be putting my blue scarf on. Underdogs all the way.

Indeed, as I said earlier, Saints can do what they want. I would've taken a dire forty-six 1-0 positive games per season in League One and The Championship in order to progress. As it happens, Saints entertained us royally with their oft-favoured 3-1 score-lines, and imperfection. I'd rather be entertained of course, and would rather Arsenal kept their old boring moniker. But Saints can most definitely do what they want.

So i avoided the scores all week, waiting for MOTD which was meant to go on i player today, but then it doesnt come up! Ahh well watched it in the end, pretty boring week of results really, apart from the city one!

The live games on Sky today - Leeds vs QPR and Palace vs Sunderland, really are for me the greatest example of a footballing version of "devil and the deep blue sea" I can think of. Barring a QPR vs West Ham cup game that is....

Sunderland is melting down...penalty to Palace after the tenth terrible mistake by their defense.

And a red for a professional foul to boot. Had to be.
