The worst part of this punishment is that we cannot sell him until his ban is up. I don't know if that is technically correct but nobodys going to buy him until then anyway.

We can sell, he just will be banned for that club as well. I reckon the Spanish two will still want him.

I must be thick, why is the colour of the top he was wearing on that day in any way conducive to the discussion here? It's a sanction against the player, and rightly so. Yet you guys keep mentioning it like it's a valid point. For the life of me, I can't see it. Saying he's more passionate about Uruguay than Liverpool doesn't mean anything, just puts your own club down.

You're right :p

If the colour of the top doesn't matter, why wasn't he banned for Uruguay when he committed the same crime in a Ajax and Liverpool shirt?

Firstly, I was surprised at the extent of the ban, but given it's his 3rd offence it maybe shouldn't be so surprising.

On Liverpool being made to suffer for an act carried out while he was playing for his country. Sorry, I just don't think you can have that.

You bought him whilst he was serving a ban for biting a player, you defended him to the hilt when he was found guilty of racially abusing another player when playing for you, and then did the same when he repeated his biting trick. You then rewarded him with a massive new contract.

He's now done it again, and you're going to pay a price for sticking with him, as he's a severely flawed individual and this is his downside. Great player but a total wild card and he's obviously not learnt a thing from his previous misdemeanours. Maybe this time the penny will drop.

[And . . . rock is once more slowly pushed up the hill.]

I know it's a long thread, but you'd think some people would read back a little to prevent posting ignorant comments. <doh> :emoticon-0114-dull:

shock horror, Tobes doesn't think Liverpool are hard done by <laugh>

I read back and came across your poem, I didn't deserve that.

Damn right too.
He invest all that money into a player, and he broke the terms of his contract by taking illegal narcotics, after we paid millions of pounds to secure his service.
Then he puts himself in a position where we cant utilise him for the reason we bought him ( to play him in football games ) yet we are still contractually obligated to pay him every week, for doing f**k all?
Fair enough if he is banned due a red card he received playing for the club, but to be banned for months for non football related matters that are outside of our control?

f**k yeah he deserved to be sued.

Same in this situation, Liverpool now have to not only lose their best player for 20 odd games, they have to pay him 200k a week too?
Its not on!

What other job would allow you to bite a peer and get 4 months paid holiday as punishment? its insane!

didn't he do it twice?

in any event you went after him for years and sued successfully for soem huge amount that was way over his earnings. or any looses over the ban period btw.

In any event it'll be interesting to see who pays and who doesn't.

if they can do that legally, i should imagine they will.

Thats the thing though, I dont think they can.
Clubs are contractually obligated to pay players every week regardless of whether they are playing, or injured, or banned.
So unless Suarez agrees to donate his wages back to the club, Liverpool will have to take him to court.

That would be the only way Suarez could make things right in my eyes, if I was a Liverpool fan, if he holds his hands up and says, "Look I ****ed up and you are being punished for it, I will give my wages back to the club for the entirety of my suspension", that would be a great gesture from him and the only way he could redeem himself imo.

If I work for a delivery company and get a severe driving ban while off-duty, should I be allowed to continue driving for the delivery company?

Completely different and as zero relevance to the conversation but I suspect you knew this anyway.

completely agree, shame it will never happen, all prem players these days are money grabbing pikeys <laugh>

All season for Liverpool he has been relatively well-behaved. Not perfect, but far from the worst. Since his bite on Ivanovic he had appeared to mostly turn the corner.

Fair play to the Liverpool staff for recognising the problem this past season and managing him and helping control his less desirable urges. So he doesn't/wouldn't act out whilst playing for our club...

He joins the Uruguay squad... and almost immediately bites someone. The result- he gets kicked out of the world cup- and can't compete in friendlies for Uruguay after the world cup. Effectively- no worse a punishment (for Uruguay) than had he been asked to miss a couple of games in the World Cup (effectively meaning Uruguay out anyway).

Instead this punishment effects Liverpool far worse than Uruguay. It's not friendlies that Liverpool will be without him for- it's for real-life cup competitions and a huge chunk of league play.

It's a minor slap for Uruguay and a huge axe swinging down on Liverpool... and we've managed to reign in the worst of his behaviour for the last season.

I understand FIFA's stance- Suarez is a repeat offender of this disgusting act. They want to give him reason to never do it again... and if this doesn't work... nothing will.
They could have handled this in a way that impacted Suarez more- and the country for which he was playing more.

A much larger fine- and exercising the full 2 year international ban (meaning he missed qualifiers AND the next major international tournament) would have impacted him more.

Any rival fans who can't understand why Liverpool fans might feel a little bit hard done-by are crazy. We've managed his bad side-all season- made him walk the line. Joins Uruguay- and they allow him out of control. And we get the full brunt of the punishment- not Uruguay!
