He was manager of Monaco's reserve team before becoming their main manager for a couple of seasons, so I'd imagine he coached Henry a fair bit
A lot of French journalists praised his attacking football, NIce were one of the highest scorers in the league in his last season too. He also used a lot of young players in doing so.
Fair enough! He may well have been involved in his development. Just that I'd not seen elsewhere he was particularly known for youth development.
Update from Jeremy Wilson: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/06/14/claude-puel-sacked-southampton/ Claude Puel has been sacked as the manager of Southampton after the club concluded that the players and fans were not behind him sufficiently and that he would not lead them to regular European football. As revealed by The Telegraph, Puel’s future has been in serious doubt since the end of April and the club have already drawn up a shortlist of potential replacements that includes the former Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel. However, Southampton are also considering other candidates and no decision is likely within the next week. Although Puel’s sacking has surprised some onlookers following a season in which the club reached the League Cup final and finished eighth in the Premier League, there have been reservations about his methods among both fans and crucially the players. Puel’s squad rotation upset captain Jose Fonte before Christmas and he was ultimately sold in January to West Ham United, while a final tally of just 41 goals was the lowest in the top half of the Premier League. Sunderland were the only club who scored fewer home league goals and Southampton also finished with 17 less points than under Ronald Koeman the previous year. Even so, the decision was not taken lightly and, while Puel’s situation has looked genuinely ominous since the middle of May, there was still a small chance of him continuing as late as last week. Southampton do not feel that he was a particularly bad appointment or that results were a huge problem, just that there was little hope of him galvanising the players and fanbase to continue their progress. The assessment and review of the season was led by executive director Les Reed. The club’s aim is regular European football and they now want to appoint a manager who can regularly challenge to meet that target. It is the first time that Southampton have sacked a manager since January 2013 when Nigel Adkins was replaced by Mauricio Pochettino and the club now hope to find a long-term solution after enforced changes in 2014 and then last summer. Tuchel is a serious option but the club are aware of his difficulties at Dortmund, where he still finished the season by winning the German Cup. They also looked at Roger Schmidt but he has now taken a job in China, as well as other German options, although those candidates do not include Jurgen Klinsmann or David Wagner. Manuel Pellegrini was already considered last summer but there were concerns that his style did not fit Southampton’s emphasis for a manager who is especially focussed on the day-to-day coaching and development of players. A statement confirmed the termination of Puel’s three-year contract after only one season. “Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year,” said the statement. “The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup Final, a day our fans will always treasure. We wish Claude well for the future.”
Return of Uwe Rosler? I guess the main positive here is that it sounds like Les Reed and whoever else behind the scenes deals with managers is taking on the hiring of a new guy, they have a good record so far, and points to a strong likelihood that they will be staying in place even with a takeover.
For me - 1 Tuchel 2 Tuchel 3 Tuchel Pay him what he wants, give him a WARCHEST and let's get on with it.
I dont quite get the Tuchel love in. Can anyone fill me in? Seems he was decent but unspectacular at Mainz and left because he was sick of re-inventing the side every year - perfect, wont be doing that here. Did well with Dortmund but again not incredibly well considering the talent at their disposal. He had Aubameyang, Weigl, Reus, Schurlle, Goetze, Kagawa, Bartra, Bender, Isak... I dont even want to start with comparisons there but we would be expecting champions league with that quality. He was rumored to have lost the dressing room after blaming players rather than hos own approach for failings and then he left after falling out with the board. So, also perfect, our board dont want anything to do with the football. http://www.dw.com/en/tuchel-a-micromanager-with-major-problems/av-38859555 Google Tuchel and problems and there's a long list of results so what do those that want him really want him for? Genuine Q, not trolling because it seems that he comes with more questions than he does answers.
Some of us actually wanted him during our post-Poch managerial search coming off his time at Mainz, for stylistic fit. As for Dortmund, I dunno. They're in a weird place; it's hard being the second-best team in a one-team league, and we're only a couple years removed from them having an absolutely shambolic season under Klopp with a surplus of talent, and Klopp is an excellent manager who is generally well-liked by his players. The internal expectations are that they should be challenging Bayern (and in recent years, I don't think any manager could coax a genuine title challenge against Bayern), and things seem to sour whenever that doesn't happen.
If you talk to Dortmund fans they'll tell you he's a better version of Klopp. He fell out with the board there because he complained that's was told they HAD to play the CL game the day after the bus bombing, which he thought was a bit ****ty. Understandably. The board didn't like that he complained. He plays attacking, exciting, effective football. Did wonders at Mainz, finished second and fourth with Dortmund despite having his star players sold from under him both seasons. He'd be a huge coup and statement of intent for us. Then he'd leave and join Arsenal in two years time.
People are underestimating Dortmund's quality. Auba, Reus, Dembele. Doesn't get much better than that in world football as a front 3. He was maligned for a situation involving Weigl in the cup final. But he won the game so I suppose justified. I would absolutely love Tuchel, but saying he was a success at Dortmund for finishing 2nd and 4th is a little simplistic. His style was bloody brilliantly though, granted.
