What is that meant to show? That the population of Gateshead and Newcastle is less than that of Hull and East Riding? If not then why stop at East Riding?

Within a 15 mile radius of St James' Park the population would be greater than it would within a 15 mile radius of the KC. If that is what some people are trying to say I won't disagree. That isn't the same as saying Newcastle get bigger crowds because they have a bigger population. It isn't the same as catchment area either. It comes down to the popularity of the sport in the region, historical links and then the number of people for who any given club is the nearest and convenient to get to.

All true, but the point Oregon was making is that Newcastle/Gateshead is 475,100, while Hull is only 262,000 and if you expand that to the surrounding counties, Tyneside goes to 824,700 while Hull and the East Riding combined only goes to 599,000(and that doesn't include any of the Sunderland/Washington/Chester-le-Street areas). Regardless of history and popularity, we're never likely to catch Newcastle, it's a significantly more heavily populated place.

NUFC is treated like a religion up in newcastle where as until we got into the premiership most people in hull supported other teams i.e man u liverpool and the leeds scum but because of our two year stint we had a lot of people jumping on the band wagon thats the main reason y i think NUFC get more fans well that and they have a bigger ground! but i could be wrong on this!

You're right, and the main reason Hull is always thought of as a smaller city than it actually is, is that people never include the surrounding areas. In other cities the suburbs are considered part of the city but for some reason in Hull none of the villages are counted in population.

I think the reason is that there's no big places near Hull. If you take Newcastle, for example, there's places with over 100,000 ver near.

I would have thought that Newcastle is safely the biggest populated area in the UK without any other clubs near.

They have also had a long tradition of football support. Fans would take their children to matches going back to when they were successful.

I started supporting City from before they were successful in the mid-sixties and I had to decide to go myself. My dad said he used to go to City but all I know about him going is when there were big attendances against Manchester United (before I was born), Everton (my first match) and Millwall (we went separately).

As a supporter for 40 years I don't get this BP atmosphere thing compared to the KC.

In the dark days of Dolan & Fish in the 90's standing as I did week in week out on Bunkers I never thought a faded BP was atmospheric.

In the final three or four years at BP I moved into Kempton and yes there was atmosphere but only because 2000 souls were crammed in there. The noise hardly reverbarated around the ground.

You would have to go back to the heady days of Waggy & Chillo when the North Stand was still standing to witness true BP passion.

The KC is a magnificent facility - yes it does get quiet during games but for me the KC wins hands down

simple solution bring back the terraces i miss standing in kempton even when we lost it was still a great atmosphere although i didn't think it was that bad in our first full season at the KC better then some of the away matches bar Yeovil!!!

From this the population of Tyneside is about 3X the population of the Kingston-upon-Hull region.

What this proves about supporting a team or otherwise I can't tell you.

When I was at Uni in Newcastle gates there had dropped to ~15,000. The biggest attendance for years was when Blyth Spartans used St James's for a cup replay against Wrexham.

For those who like to stand at the game - and that includes me - the visitor's end at Peterborough is still terracing. I'm looking forward to that one as it the closest game for me this season.

The wiki thing I got simply referred to the stats from the last government census (2001). It won't be as accurate as the more recent estimations, and I'm sure Hull will have lost people in that time. But the argument is ridiculous here. If you add Gateshead or the surrounding areas as well then yes Tyneside is bigger but I'm taliking about Hull versus Newcastle. Everyone in the country likes to pretend Hull is a **** city and some people haven't even heard of it, yet they've heard of York. I'd bet the majority of the country wouldn't think of Hull as being one of the biggest cities, but it is. As someone proud of Hull, I'm keen for more people to realise it's a bigger and better place than they think. Obviously size isn't everything but I just hate the city being looked down on as a pointless small one.
