This first batch got Joy valve gear and due to their high consumption, they got the nickname “Gobblers”. Holden made 120 more between 1903 and 1909, which received Stephenson valve gear for lower fuel consumption. Many were fitted with a condensing gear for London traffic.

On the weekend of September 7th-8th, 2013, the Iowa Interstate Railroad brought out their Chinese QJ 2-10-2 steam locomotive #7081 once again, for a series of excursions on the railroad, between Geneseo and Annawan, IL on the 7th, and between Tiskilwa and Sheffield, IL on the 8th. The engine ran on many round trips between the towns each day. Before and after the weekend of excursions, Iowa Interstate ran 7081 on a number of deadhead moves from the QJ's base in Newton, Iowa.
