Agreed. In fact I wonder whether any proven Premier League players at all would be satisfied signing to be 4th choice. And of those who would, are they gonna be a better option than Stephens? I'm not so sure.
You have to remember we will hopefully have a lot of games this season. Even our fourth choice cb could end up playing 10+ games at least.
Plus this could well be Fonte's last season for us. So if Caulker or another prove themself they could become first choice.

You don't sign on the basis that you'll be 4th choice, you sign on the basis that there are many games and 2/3 of the 4 squad players will play each week. You sign to compete for a place in the eleven.
Caulker on loan would be grand as a squad option, especially as we seem to be forgetting that Stephens' long term future is likely in midfield. I certainly wouldn't want that kind of pressure put on him coming in at CB. Especially should Fonte, Yoshida or VVD pick up an injury.

I would be happy with Caulker, always rated him at Spurs, and has been at 2 awful teams since. Last season he started the season having to carry Ferdinand, then had Dunne as a partner.
Teaming him with Fonte could be a really good combination, and he is still young for a centre half, so with the right coaching could become a top class player.
Offer QPR 5M, ease him into the side during the season, then if all goes well sell him to Liverpool for 30M in the summer of 2017.

I don't think any player of Caulker's age will think he is signing to be 4th choice. Why do people think that they would. They are egotistical footballers. In Caulker's case, one who has had two seasons of Premier league football and an England cap. The player will sign for a strong, up and coming Premier League side with European football, a fair crack at domestic cups and an excellent reputation for developing players. Any player signing will fancy his chances of breaking into the team. They won't be signing thinking, "Whooppee - 4th Choice at Southampton"

Will do him far more good than hanging around the fringes at Southampton. Gives him a chance to prove himself. Does demonstrate how much harder it will be for our youngsters to go straight into the first team now...may be the long term plan to accommodate youngsters, but will only happen now for the very best. Some (who may be later developers) will be better out on loan at carefully selected clubs.
