Spurs now have Kaboul, Verthongen, Chiriches, Fazio, Toby and Dier as centre backs. That's a lot!

Plus a 22 year old called Kevin Wimmer (you can probably guess that I know nothing about him!). Austrian international CB. Signed him a few weeks back, for £4m - £5m.

For most of the EPL, they don't lose their best players because they aren't good enough. Half the PL probably don't have a single player that the top 6 teams would be interested in (or perhaps one at the most). We are that rare team that has a group of desirable players packed full of potential and yet, we aren't one of the untouchable teams. Even Spurs and Liverpool are at risk if United, Chelsea or City want their player. We are big enough to attract players, big enough to manage to keep most of the side, but circumstances dictate that we may lose a couple of the best every season.

See: Aston villa. They were where we are now a few years ago. They also got ripped apart.

The difference is we are run a lot better, and hopefully will deal with the losses more easily than they did.

They're always the best example of what not to do with funds you receive from selling your players to bigger clubs.

Main players sold since summer 2009: Knight (£4m), Barry (£12m), Milner (£26m), Downing (£20m), Young (£16m)

And where some of that money has gone: Warnock (£7m), Ireland (£8m), Bent (£18m), Makoun (£6m), N'Zogbia (£10m), Hutton (£4m), Lowton (£3m), Kozak (£5m), Okore (£4m), Sanchez (£5m), El Ahmadi (£2.5m), Tonev (£2.5m), Bacuna (£3m), Jensen (£2m), Bennett (£2.5m), Sylla (£2m), Beye (£2,5m), Cissokho (£2m).

Including those £2m - £4m amounts is important, because they quickly add up (plus all of their wages). And pretty much all on players who don't get a kick (and/or have since been sold at a loss). Benteke, Delph, Downing and maybe Given, Dunne and/or Vlaar are the only successes they've purchased during this six year period, before now.

And if you go back another year or two, you also find that they ultimately made substantial losses on Reo-Coker, Davies, Young, Heskey, Harewood, Friedel, Sidwell, Shorey and Cuellar.

Benteke?

We're not really having to rebuild this year though. A CB, RB and DM. Only one of those has actually 'left' the club to date. We only needed a GK because of an unfortunate injury. That's regular summer turnover (if not actually relatively light).

I disagree! Our squad wasn't strong enough to last the whole season just gone so we needed more strength then. With players leaving and the exertions of Europa ahead we need a much stronger squad.

I agree we do, but that's a different prospect to a rebuild. It's putting an extension on a house, not knocking up something from a plot of land.

Agreed. We need 6-7 players bought in to stand still bearing in mind the raft of players that have gone from the squad and then another 3 or so added to deal with the rigours of the EPL season and the EL competition

We are going to be busy

Think we'll see: CDM, CDM/CM, CB, Winger. Only 4 more needed I think. Ramirez, Gallagher, Rodriguez, have all returned from last season, which we didn't have.

I'm expecting similar, but we're going to be spread awfully thin. I doubt Gaston will remain with the club.

Would prefer that we got a genuine number 10-type playmaker attacking mid in place of the winger, if we're only bringing in ~4.

We may be gaining a Gaston, a Jay and a Gallagher but we are losing Elia and Duricic. So in terms of numbers, we are going to be much the same as last season, which in my opinion was too thin even with no Europa.
