I'm not so sure, I think the reason players look so good at the lesser teams is because the team is set up to their strengths, making them look better than perhaps they are if they move into a different system. Take Bony as an example (he hasn't played much yet so I'm not writing him off) but at Swansea they were playing all their attacking football through him, playing off the fact that he is a strong, physical type who gets knockdowns/lay offs then peels his way into the box. At City the main attacking player is obviously Aguero who is best at receiving through balls and having a creative 3 behind him. City will set up and play what suits Aguero best and the others just have to slot in, which unless you are very good, means they will look pretty average.

It is part of the reason I don't like Pelle/don't want Austin. I think having these types of striker as our main attacking outlet stifles the creativity and ability of the 3 behind, and think we would be much more effective with a more mobile front man.

EDIT: Not sure why I quoted your post as I wasn't really responding to your point, just continuing my thought from last night with maybe a bit more clarity

2 games - home and away. And I was at both. If Hal Robson Kanu can consistently make you look like a chump then...

So why do we not play better with Long as our CF?

How many games have we started with Long in the lone striker role? Off the top of my head I can't think of many, and the team is obviously used to playing with Pelle and changing the way you play isn't just done with a quick flick of the switch.

Exactly one such game in the league: the 1-1 draw away at Chelsea.

But this season, we're going to have to play quite a few games without Pelle up top in any instance; even 37 league starts a year ago was unreasonable, and it showed in his performances. With so many games we'll need to be able to have the players used to a variety of options up front, because using a variety of options is the only way we'll keep everyone fit and performing.

And didn't we give Chelsea a scare in that first half?

We flat-out outplayed them in the first half, I'd argue. Long wasn't anything spectacular in that one, but he moved their CBs around and provided Mane space to operate.

Rewatched the entire 1st half only the other day. We not only took the game to Chelsea, we made the commentary team sit up and take notice.

That's quite a claim in such a crowded field. Where do these hacks get their stories from? Come on DTLW, shed some light.

You wonder how effective it would to play a front three of Long, Mane and Jrod...
