Going from Virgil to Caulker? Seriously? If we lost Yoshida then I might say buy him to develop and stand in but really?!

Koeman has mentioned we could be buying two defenders following the Gardos injury.
Makes sense that one of these is a loan move.
He had a good season alongside Williams at Swansea with a well organized club like ourselves.

In Cardiff and QPR he has made some questionable career moves to clubs which were unstable at best.

Think this is a good deal for Saints and Caulker as I think he has the talent to improve.
Just depends on whether QPR want the money this summer

Wouldn't want him as our primary CB acquisition, but as a Gardos replacement he's fine, and has upside.

He was pretty poor at cardiff too, admittedly neither of these clubs are run as well as saints, but even as 4th choice he doesn't fill me with any confidence
But really good at Swansea? He just needs to find a team to settle with. Plus we have Fonte and Koeman who can help him out.

Didn't see much of him with Swansea to be honest, but saw a chunk of him at cardiff. He makes too many positional errors and needs a huge amount of improvement in this area. He also seemed to be lazy quite often, not busting a gut to chase back etc. not sure he'll have what it takes, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

Caulker as a 4th choice CB on loan is okay. It provides some cover that we need. As a season-end purchase - do not see this happening at the moment - unless he shows considerable improvement but as Beefy has written, under Fonte/Koeman he has a chance to prove himself. So the whole deal looks sound, if we get the agreement watertight, which I am sure we will get right this time around... :emoticon-0107-sweat

Caulker and Gardos are both not good enough for a top 8 club whether it be first or fourth choice.
Add to that the fact that Caulker is very well paid so would be a very expensive fourth choice. We already have Ramirez draining our resources and delivering very little

Caulker and VVD would add huge depth. Caulker, as Beefy said, would be excellent next to Fonte. He's committed and reads the game ok. At QPR he was often asked to be the main man, here he would be led. Also knows how to attack a ball in the opposition's box.

Fonte
VVD
Caulker
Maya

Very nice indeed.

I rated Caulker when he was at Spurs. I remember one game when Spurs come down to St marys and he won everything that day. I was then shocked when Cardiff got him and was a tad jealous. He would be a very decent 4th option in my opinion.

How often do we have to remind people of Ryan Bertrand?!!

Happy to give Caulker a chance.

Koeman knows a thing or two about being a defender...maybe that's why he brings out the best defensively in people who have not been particularly good elsewhere?

...perhaps some of his ability to shoot can also start to rub off this year?

Also I find the writing off of Gardos as 'not good enough' depressing. He's been here one season, done nothing wrong, and here's a thing - players can improve...

Exactly you only have to see how much Yoshida has improved in his time here. I think a lot of people write Gardos off just cos Maya was ahead of him last year, I think there's a good CB in there.

Some of the same people that wouldn't be up for giving Jonny Evans a chance are willing to give Caulker a chance! I know who I would rather take a punt on personally. But I'm happy to trust in Reed and Koeman, that whoever we bring in will be up to scratch.

Caulker is to replace Gardos. If Evans came here he would be first choice and on about 80k a week.

But players can get worse as well.... Not writing him of yet. But after a below average first season and now a big injury. Gardos will take time to get back to full fitness as well, so he has to prove himself big time once back. Then if the rumour of Caulker is true, Gardos could see himself being 5th choice and no player of his age wants that.
