But what was the contract offered to him? Just playing devil's advocate btw, maybe it wasn't good enough.

We can't run the club by giving players/agents what they think they're worth ...

... signing/keeping players should be based on what we think they're worth.

I don't know how anyone could disagree tbh.

I agree, I'm not saying just give him what he wants, but who's knows what he's been offered? Might be a paltry offer in his opinion. I don't know what we pay our players. Might not have been long enough. Especially considering what would seem our stance is with "aging" players.
For all we know this talk of him being sold could be a load of **** anyway and both parties have decided to let him prove his fitness before signing a new deal.

I struggle to believe we’ve offered him a bad deal, considering Ballard, who I’d imagine was one of our higher earners anyway based on where he came from, the fee and who we beat to sign him, has signed a new deal
Mind, Ballards younger with more sell on potential in a year or two time.

He's under contract and we don't need to sell. Southampton have £100m burning a hole and they need a striker. I'd say start the bidding at £10m or we'll keep him. Thanks very much

Won't happen like, probably go for just enough to cover the Rusyn fee and a PL loan

This for me 8m needs to be minimum or let him see out his contract. Again this is dependent on what the payer is saying/attitude.

But I think it would be in his best interest to do that and have a good season here, prove he is over the injury and be a free agent come the summer. He will get a better wage and signing bonus if he does that.

Unless we or he has have doubts over his fitness and a bird in the hand and all that.

He's done well since he came here but has had quite some help from our attacking players and style. That has possibly given him the confidence to be asking for more money.

But how much more a week will Southampton give him in reality. If it's really enough to move the length of the country, gets used to new team mates, etc, and risk failing to come back from his injury quickly then fair enough.

The Coventry supporters are already moaning about Simms so he'd need to hit the ground running. He had an eight match scoreless run that almost cost us the L1 playoffs iirc. Stewart would be replacing a Southampton hero so won't be given a run like that before people start groaning.

He's had no interest from any of the PL clubs, even the likes of Burnley, Sheff Utd, etc, not even Everton who don't look like they'll score all season.

Perhaps I'm different but there's no more heroes anymore ...

... only when they're playing for us.

If I can throw my tuppence worth in - there was a contract on the table well before he got injured and for whatever reason he didn't sign it. If he truly wanted to be here I think there would've been a compromise on both sides to ensure it was signed. All roads seem to point that he's away, so thanks for the memories and good luck

Aye. Take the cash (and it has to be significant) and move on. There will be other strikers

I really don't understand why a lot of Sunderland supporters talk down the value of our best players, most other clubs talk up the value of a player. Talking up the value surely helps with the hype which in turn ups the value and make the buying club to come to the realisation that they need to pay over the odds, just like we used to always do, we need to do to others what they try to do to us!

Luton were miles away last season ...

... team spirit and determination put them higher than clubs that had spent more.

Norwich and Watford had the parachute payments and failed.

Southampton could be buying a player they can't do a medical on ...

... they look like a badly run club tbh.

We reached the play offs without Ballard, Stewart, Batth, Cirkin and Alese meaning we lost all of our height against a team that plays football at altitude. Those players may now all be available which is half a team ...

... I'd say it's quite difficult to say where we'll finish until we know what team we'll have and who we sign, Amad might even return.
A small minority seem to forget this massive stat

Unfortunately what us fans say or think about players have zero impact on the value we get. Its all about the needs of both clubs, length of contract and the value in the market.

We all want stewart to stay but if we get a good fee - anything 8million n above imo - for a player likely to leave a free then thats a good thing.

The issue will be the timing, hard to get a replacement in a short space of time especially when selling clubs will know we are desperate for a striker

These decisions are always tough for the club, hopefully we make the right ones over the next couple of days as we have the bases of a cracking team again
