A lot swirling round about Baath. Some saying he’s unsettled and wants away for family reasons. Some saying he’s being pushed out door. Interest from Blackburn and he won’t have his contract renewed here. No idea where the reality is in all this but given the way we’ve gone about things last couple of years I’m pretty relaxed club will do right thing, for the player and the team. Either there’s someone else coming in to replace him or a huge statement of faith in Ballard.

Assumption is an interesting one though isn't it. This just seems far far too risky for me.

I don't know about far too risky, Ballard is probably capable of stepping up as a senior CB (the same way Neil has in CM) and we've got O'Nien as well. I'd rather keep Batth because he's an important player for a number of reasons but I can see how we'd get by without him.

Who knows how good the new lads will be but at the very least they're big enough to fill in for Batth physically.

Think speakman has said the priority is always signing quality players that can help us short n long term

The good thing is by this time next yr the likes of cirkin, alese, neil, ballard, patto etc will all be experienced and can start to fill the void of any experienced players we do lose

The key is always going to be to continue to improve the squad every window
Yeah but if they perform again and we don't get up we won’t have them. That’s why we cant rinse and repeat so big so often.

I'd very much like Danny Batth to stay at safc for next season. Class player and a top pro.
Yes I too think Batth is a great player, but I also think SAFC are been very respectful and not selfish. Yes they could play him for another year, without letting him know his contract wont be renewed, but they also realise at the start of next season he'll be close to 34, and the chances of him then getting a decent contract elsewhere are very unlikely. If he can get a 2 year contract elsewhere it makes him and his family more secure. Our philosophy is to buy young and develop. These 2 we signed plus Alese will cope fine. I don't expect promotion this year, and I don't think KLD or Speakman do either. This year is all about getting stronger with more players able to step up if required. If we go up it'll be a bonus. If we need to sell a player or two, then so be it, I'd expect they have potential replacements in their sights. Lets just wait till the end of the transfer window before the bedwetting starts

Doesn't make sense not to keep him and assess him and the new lads. If they are better he goes, if he is still the most reliable cb at the club he gets another year or two!
However the club have said that if a player wants to leave for playing reasons etc then they will let them.

Seems to me that they have told Batth that this is his last season and rather than force him to stay until January they are prepared to let him leave if he wants to.

100%. Best defender we have. By a mile. But the club is different these days. It's not TM decision.
Hang on. What's not TMs decision? Whether he gets selected or whether we want to retain him? Because I would have the the first very definitely IS TMs decision, the latter is a consensus opinion from KLD/KS/TM.

I understand decisions but it doesn't seem like he is on the decline does it. Absolute monster for us and literally pots. Seems to be getting moved on to satisfy the model and model only.

Model needs to flex at certain times, hes a fantastic player to have around & others to learn from....we always will need a couple of older heads in

Linked to Tom cannon today via Nixon not sure what he’s like for Everton info I know he’s hit and miss with us

It would make a lot of sense. We clearly have a working relationship with Everton (Broadhead, Simms) and they've done well out of us loaning their strikers and giving them a platform.

Cannon looks really talented and I'd say he can probably play in any of the 3 roles behind the striker too, which makes him flexible enough not to be stuck on the bench for us.

He’s one id be happy with good record at Preston and looked streets ahead of delap against us at the end of the season

Sunderland are planning to offer an initial £3 million for Everton striker Tom Cannon as the Black Cats set their sights on promotion next season.

That is according to a report from The Sun on Sunday (9/7; page 63), which notes that the Toffees were not expecting permanent bids for the 20-year-old in this window.

Tony Mowbray’s men agonisingly missed out on promotion last term. And it is suggested that they are preparing a £3 million plus add-ons move for the Everton starlet.

Meanwhile, Luton and Preston North End also want the youngster

Considering Gooch and Pritchard will be out the door soon, I'm really concerned about the lack off leadership and experience. Feels like we are so fixated on going one way that eventually it'll go wrong .
Yup. We still need a core of established players who lead by example and set tone. Can dig out results when things are going against us. We need guys like.Baath and Pritchard..

I've been told Batth wants to move on for personal / family reasons. Funny how stories are varied depending on the source.

I find it hard to believe we have told 3 players at the start of pre season they won't be getting new contracts in a years time.

Seems far to far away to be making such rigid decisions and not great motivation for them to stick around. What if one decides to stay and tears the league up and is our best player till Christmas, would we back track and offer them a deal?

A permanent would be good mind, I assumed they wouldn't sell him at all this summer.
