Doesn't make sense not to keep him and assess him and the new lads. If they are better he goes, if he is still the most reliable cb at the club he gets another year or two!
Agree with this. Especially when the two new lads haven’t been in training/playing properly yet. They haven’t been able to even judge whether they are ready. I’ll trust them, but it’s a bold call. If it doesn’t work out, questions will be asked. They know that.

Be interesting to see who will be regular team skipper if DB does go.
Probably Ballard or Neil or Clarke.
Has to be someone who is guaranteed to start

It seems some people are more obsessed with 'the model' than actual reality. This player was POTS for us last year and the most consistent defender across the season. Canny wild how some are happy to just forget it all because of 'the model'.

Decision has already been made, that's why we have been in the market and replaced with 2 others. See how it goes I guess but I am very dubious.
I’m with you on this. Changes are good, too many are bad. Evans out so no experienced leader with a load of young kids. Top bloke as well. Good role model.

would hate to see batth leave, good, solid performer...but...there were rumours of personal problems and wanting a move now that the club are simply getting rid.

obviously none of this has been proven and i doubt it will come out any time but if the lad wants to stay then he is valuable experience in this squad as well (at least) a very capable defender for this league.

Theres not been too many changes so far - hope there arent loads to come in this window but suppose time will tell

Tell him he is valued and we appreciate his contribution and leadership skills. Thank him for his POTS performance last season. Offer him a one year with the option of another.

Not kick him down the road for younger players who had hardly played close to championship level.
Considering Gooch and Pritchard will be out the door soon, I'm really concerned about the lack off leadership and experience. Feels like we are so fixated on going one way that eventually it'll go wrong .

No not yet but Baath Pritch looking definite and my guys tell me 2 of our best 3. Come back to me if I’m wrong.

Think speakman has said the priority is always signing quality players that can help us short n long term

The good thing is by this time next yr the likes of cirkin, alese, neil, ballard, patto etc will all be experienced and can start to fill the void of any experienced players we do lose

The key is always going to be to continue to improve the squad every window

Yeah I get that mate.
Just not sure why you give Evans a deal but not batth considering how well he has done for us, makes no sense that.

Yeah i get that as well, think evans one was to help him with his rehab after a bad injury

As i said id def keep batth as i really like him as a player and a pro

Just think a lot is now getting said about the model but speakman has said the model is about improving the team - they now have the data n recruitment team in place to make that possible

I just hope if he does go that nectar or seelt turn into studs of CBs this season - as a few have said thats not a given

Where’s that from?

They're actively trying to force him out this window?
He's contracted until 2024. He's been told he isn't getting new terms. Player is looking elsewhere. Sunderland would be happy to keep him on those terms. Hence why they triggered the extension. He signed an 18 month deal with option of 1 year 18 months ago. We activated that 1 year this summer.

If we were trying to force him out this summer, we wouldn't have triggered that option.

Much like Tom Flanagan etc. He had 6 months left and club were happy for him to contribute to those months and he knew he wouldn't be getting new terms. He chose more security at Shrewsbury and SAFC didn't stand in his way.

We need a solid experienced player at the back who knows this league inside out and we get rid of Batth? Wow.

Clubs sometimes trigger 1 year deals just so they can get a transfer fee.
