Hate stuff like this. Potentially another talented youngster just thrown his career away, or Reading have just been screwed out of a potential big money move in future for a talent they've been developing for years.

The whole system is crap.

It's just rape, pure and simple rape of resources. It's why Brentford and one or two others now refuse to take on any young players. Only those over 18 for them. More will follow. No one can blame them.

Another exame of the game being run for and by a few clubs in their own interests.

Not sure if it's Spain or another country, but I remember reading that compensation payments for this sort of thing never stop in some countries, like perhaps the initial fee is small but every time the player hits a certain milestone of appearances, transfers, trophies caps etc the payments are uncapped potentially reaching hundreds of millions.

Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s Spain, minimum release clauses are a mandatory in La Liga

Spain have a system yeah, unfortunately it only benefits Barca & Real cos the number of players who are at one or the other at some stage is absolutely mind blowing.

Yep, think I've read something like that.

But here , everything is done to suit a few clubs, everything.

They have most of the money, but it's not enough, they want more. They have the best players, but it's not enough, they want yours too.

They are a ruinous, self serving cancer on the game, aided and abetted by a willing and venal, amateur executive

Very succinct and utterly damning of the game which is off to hell in a handcart

It would make it all the sweeter if we can make a success of our absolute focus on youth.

Be a blueprint for other clubs to follow and give young, up and coming players a wake up call. Those who have their eyes open and are being advised well.

All correct.

But if one of those few clubs wants one of our players, they get him. And if he's a young lad , under 18 and without a pro contract, they'll get him for five shillings and sixpence. Just because they want him, and in case he's exceptional. If he's not, he can go out somewhere, hope he makes it, and another will be brought in.

Just in case.

I'm going to defend the local journalists and say they are entirely constrained by both their editorial instruction (get clicks) as well as their access.

Media is broken in this country - journalists can't do the job they want to be doing. Good journalists have to resort to guessing and baiting.

It's why all the good ones left the print industry a couple of years ago to move to the Athletic. A site that derives its income from the quality of its work, not the volume of its clicks. It allows them to focus purely on stories rather than engagement.
Good journalists have to, mmmmmmmmmm? I thought reporting the facts was a required.

It certainly would mate.
