I think we have enough depth at the back. We’re still very light up top though. Another forward, plus another in the middle of the park. I’d love Hamer from Coventry.

All depends if the new lads brought in last season really step up: Ba, Lihadji, Benette … and if Pritch stays around. But we look light in that area.

If we were to sign a defender I’d prefer a left back as opposed to a create half. Ideally one who could also play Wing Back. For me Alese is a centre half not a left back albeit he does a decent job at Lb when required. I’d therefore like a young left back to support and cover Cirkin. This would by default improve cover at CH as Alese and Onien wouldn’t be covering as many positions.

Southgate's only clear flaw IMO is a tendency to almost freeze in the biggest games. Not so much against France, when a tight game was just out of reach.

But against Croatia in the WC semis, and Italy in the Euros, we scuttled back too early behind an early goal, and basically didn't partake in the second halves of both games until the equaliser. Both goals were invited by stasis

Easy watching from a County Durham couch, but we clearly needed a change to get some possession in both games. I always thought that he could have done at those times, with an older head with him. Especially against Italy.

The chance might not come again. But Southgate has definitely exceeded expectations, has developed many young players who would probably have been mostly ignored by others, and has consistently got results.

He does have Harry Kane mind!
Whilst I do agree with what you say it is also worth noting that Southgate has previously stated that to win a major tournament teams have to set up defensively and he even spoke in glowing terms about how Italy have won major tournaments without having the best team. that said I think he is missing out on how the game has changed and how quick passing and attacking football are now the norm. He seems stuck with the idea that when we play better nations we should be a more defensive outfit when in reality I think we need to be more progressive. There are not many teams in world football with a better more in depth squad than England, there may be teams with certain better players but as a squad we are very good I think probably only France and maybe Brazil have as rounded a squad but other than that it is hard to pick a better squad. Like has been said previously and should be a benchmark for England if Klopp or Pep were in charge of England in the euro final would we have been as timid in attack and allowed Italy back in that game??? I personally dont think so we would have played for goals 2 and 3 and put the game to bed instead of dropping back and trying to win 1-0.

Sky Italia and SSN reporting man city are close.to completing the Declan rice signing

That will be a slap in the face for Arsenal that mind.
They’ve thought he was nailed on to go there for months and they’ve ****ed about on the price.

Really hope he chooses Arsenal. City are just going to walk the league from the next 10 years if they are allowed to hoover up all the talent

BBC transfer gossip saying this morning that Arsenal are still going to sign him.

Wouldn't be the first time Sky have jumped the gun on transfers

This is getting daft now. Money money money. He is a player that would shine in any top league. You cant tell me elite sports people dont want to play elite sport anymore. Sad times.
Most of the saudi clubs are owned by newcastles owners. These players will be loaned to newcastle on a fraction of the wages so to not get newcastle in ffp trouble

If they want him, it's a done deal. No one here can match their cash.
Very true mate, some of it may come down to where Rice wants to be and he's made all the noises that he wants to go to arsenal, but money will talk no doubt

Yep. Can't win much without a good back line, though Argentina pretty well managed it last year IMO.

My thought was really, not so much chasing another goal, but just getting some decent posession to take the rhythm of pressure away.

But we'll see. Should be canny next year. Might venture out on spec. Maybe spot a player or two we might need if we get up!

Sadly Newcastle could these days.... they just need to find out how to circumvent the FFP rules
Players will go to newcastles owners saudi clubs then be loaned to newcastle who will pay a small fraction of the wages hence staying within ffp rules. Think neves is one they looking at doing it with

After the uproar with the LIV golf thing in the US I’d be surprised if they get away with doing this. Can’t see other clubs keeping quiet about it.

US senate have basically summoned both the gaffer of the PGA tour and that slimy ****er who runs the PIF into a hearing next month as they’re investigating the merger. US/Saudi tensions are already at breaking point so it might not be all it seems.

My only concern is if Saudi start buying other clubs deadweight to help out with their FFP issues as a sweetener to allow them to do as they please.
