Omar Alderete is a 28-year-old Paraguayan centre-back who currently plays for Getafe in La Liga and is a regular for the Paraguay national team. Standing at around 6’2”, he’s a left-footed defender who can also fill in at left-back, but his bread and butter is playing on the left side of a central pairing.

He came through at Cerro Porteño in Paraguay, before spells in Argentina with Gimnasia and Huracán. His big break in Europe came with Basel in Switzerland, where he impressed enough to earn a move to the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin. After a season there, he went on loan to Valencia in Spain, where he established himself as a capable La Liga defender. In 2022, Getafe took him on loan, then made the move permanent in 2023 on a five-year deal.

Alderete is known for his physicality and aerial ability – he’s the type of centre-half who thrives in a battle. He reads the game well, positions himself smartly, and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line. In the 2024/25 La Liga season, he’s had matches where he’s racked up 15+ clearances, won the majority of his aerial duels, and made key blocks to keep his side in games. His manager at Getafe, José Bordalás, values his no-nonsense style in a team built on defensive organisation and resilience.

Internationally, Alderete has been a mainstay for Paraguay since making his senior debut in 2018, earning around 30 caps and scoring a few goals – including winners in competitive fixtures. He’s featured in South American World Cup qualifying and Copa América campaigns, often up against top-tier attacking talent from Brazil and Argentina.

In terms of style, think of a left-footed Dan Ballard in terms of defensive commitment, but with more La Liga experience and a bit more comfort on the ball. He’s not going to dribble out from the back or spray 60-yard diagonals every five minutes, but he will make sure the basics are done consistently and aggressively.

Transfer-wise, Alderete has been linked with Premier League sides like Tottenham, and there’s talk of interest from Serie A (Bologna). His release clause at Getafe is reportedly around €16m, and he’s under contract until 2028.

In short: a tough, aerially dominant, experienced international who’s battle-tested in top European leagues. If Sunderland were ever linked with him, he’d instantly raise the physicality and leadership levels at the back, while bringing the nous that comes from years in La Liga and international football

I like the sound of a €16m release clause
