Still think Lucumi might happen but if I was a betting man I'd say we will sign a centre back in the next 5 days but that centre back hasn't been linked yet.
I was just going to post something along those lines. I think a name is going to come out of the blue.

Interesting point that. The club are clearly aiming higher. However, he would absolutely walk into our starting 11 currently.

I thought that when we didnt get him on a permanent as soon as possible that we must have had at least a couple of irons ready to pull out of the fire. We are still waiting......

Think we have to tether ourselves to perspective during these lulls.

I’m getting as antsy as anyone about the lack of CB signing ahead of West Ham, but if you’d told any of us the transfer window we’ve had to date back in May, we’d have been in disbelief.

Whether it’s in time to play the opener or not, I’m confident the club will have a few CBs in the door before the window shuts. I think the lads we do have are more than capable of putting in strong performances if called upon, even if it’s not ideal.

I still think Lucumi gets done. Hopefully by Wednesday.
Seems like he's the one we've identified. However, that comes with in-built delays. We absolutely can't go chasing a deal for a 27 year old with only a year left. We have to make them sweat to get a sensible price. But the schedule for that is up to Bologna - and is likely to go closer to the deadline than we'd ideally prefer.

I'm still relaxed about the CB situation, just, as I know the club are working hard to get these deals done. I (all of us) don't want to just sign a CB for the sake of it, it has to be a quality defender that improves us - sometimes that means waiting for that player. The club will have cut offs with targets, as they'll need to move on to the next CB on the list.

We all want a CB in for the West Ham game, the club will be the same however, the most important thing is getting the right player in. I was hoping to get a CB in by next weekend so they could play with Ballard tomorrow but that's not happening.

The key then is to sign them with enough time to get plenty of time with Ballard, Hume and Reinildo on the training pitch.

Someone like Lucumi has been playing plenty minutes in preseason and he's used to playing in a back 4 so i wouldn't be a concern if he didn't get much time on the training pitch with the lads.

Huggins or Seelt will likely come in if a CB isn't signed, I'd trust Huggins a lot more than Seelt. Really concerned by Seelts lack of physicality, despite his height. Huggins will struggle against Bowen but let's be honest most LBs do in the PL - the key is how we double up on him and stop him getting the ball in good positions.

It's always easy to focus on where we need to strengthen and forget about our strengths - i can our CM should dominate West Ham's, I think we can double up on them in the wide areas and isolated Fullkrug upfront

The bad news today is I'm working from home and no news ever breaks when I'm working fdom home, so I'll take the blame if nothing happens today folks
Go anywhere else and work there I need something to happen :emoticon-0102-bigsm

That's a bit obvious. I didn't say they didn't have decent starters already. Would be a bit strange if the league winners from last season didn't have a couple of half decent CBs.....

My point is that the CB market is extremely tough this window, if we want quality in . Every club is competing for them

Whether Liverpool want cover or starting players is irrelevant.

In fact, if they only want cover I'd say that means they'll be looking at exactly the same CBs as us
I think you're right mate. As it stands,it seems to be the position we've found more difficult than even the striker, which historically is always difficult.

Dango would be a dream signing for me, cant see us pulling it off but if they do I will also be pulling it off

Also no links to him yet like

Outtara would be a great signing for us, would be that versatile winger that can play across the front three, and RLB knows him too. He's left-footed as well

Lucumi is a top quality cb and Italian teams are a right stubborn lot re fees etc.

They know they have to sell him because he’ll leave for free next summer if not. It’s all part of the negotiating game. Standard practice.

I’d lost faith in Mepham long before he was dropped.

It took RLB longer but I’ve never thought we’d make the deal permanent.

He's good in the Championship but not consistently PL standard in my opinion.

Aye, we need better, but he'd be a perfect early season stop gap, and later squad player. Particularly as he has played a canny few Premier League games and already knows his way around the club.
